Yeah, he should have given them away for free...

These are parts that come up for sale once or twice a decade. They would have sold at twice the asking price.

If anyone needs a setup, there's a nice one for sale over on facebook. Factory shroud #40, carbs, intake, linkage. It sounds like a complete bolt on a run setup. Price is $12,500 OBO. If someone needs that for a real W30 car they could get it all in one shot.

I use to own that #40 shroud and if it's the same tricarb setup that I got with the shroud,I also owned it. I bought both of them out of Gulfport,MS in the very early 90's for $400. They had no idea what they had or how much it was worth. The guy who had it said he bought it off a 66 442 racecar sitting in a carport. I tried and tried to find that car but nobody knew where it went.

Chase your dream lover.
This is what I dream about. 4 of the 8-10 shrouds I have owned over the years. I have a wonderful life, great wife & family, every things paid for, doesn't get much better than that.

I keep big cars, not 442’s, but for the price couldn’t someone with the skills & machinery be found to stamp out a bunch of accurate reproductions? Maybe even onshore?

I’m against counterfeiting and misrepresentation, but why not just get some made for people who want ‘em?

I faked up 2 dual snorkel air cleaners for my ‘66’s for like $400-500 each, just for fun. But not $10k. I can’t weld or paint, so I just took the parts to my favorite body shop and asked them to weld up, clean up and paint. Nobody but me will ever care, but they’re fun.

Still, for the speculator, or dead serious hobbyist, at least there is a price at which they can get the parts they want/need. Not my bag, but for those who care, go to it. I just don’t play at that level. Heck, I feel guilty for the occasional desperate buy from OldsObsolete.com.

And remember for those storing & selling the rare parts for all those decades, there’s a cost on their side to - land, storage, inventory, marketing, etc. At the end of all that, I’ve got no axe to grind. Maybe they view it as funding their retirement.

Cheers
Chris

These shrouds are a complex part. It has been thought about by a lot of people and even a CAD scan was done in the design room of one of the BIG 3 automakers. There's so many tooling dies needed and the presses to be used are huge. It's just not a cost effective deal because of demand. Every time one of these come up for sale guys start talking about how they want it but when it's time to do the deal they come up on the side of a milk carton. As a matter of fact the original numbered shrouds were done by Demmer Tooling by beating them out over a wooden die. The second design non numbered shrouds were done by GM's vendor for their other air cleaners.

Roger, I really enjoy working on these tri carbs and helping people with them. There's a guy on here who bought a complete setup from me and he was having issues with one of the end carbs. When he bought it I told him that I stand behind it as long as need be. He sent the carb back to me a couple of times before I just replaced it with another carb. My reputation is worth more than anything to me. Thanks for all of the business over the years.

The seller of the shroud is a great guy, a man of integrity and honesty. He sells top quality, hard to find Oldsmobile parts at fair prices. He has helped many people with their projects - including me. I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit here idle and let someone bash a good friend of mine.

Bob is a great guy and now lives in Oklahoma. He is a member of NTOC and we see him occassionally. He still has that car and I have seen it once. He also has a very nice 68 red Delta with the police intercepter engine in it. Pretty rare.

Try this
Oldsmobile 442 Facebook Page
It's not listed in Marketplace but in the Oldsmobile 442 group page.

X2. He is on my Ignore List also. I doubt we are the only two. He is only the second person I have put on that list. The other was many years ago and passed away quite a few years back.

Been on this site for a long time. The first and only guy I have ever placed on ignore is one and the same. Bad enough that I had to inquire about the ignore feature.
