He almost has the story straight on it. They were available as dealer only items, definitely not factory issue. Therefore didn't get regular GM part numbers and didn't show up in the parts books.
They were '65 and '66 only, too, a different kit for each year. I don't *think* the decals were were any different between the two years, but I know the instructions were the different.
Kits were available in black, blue, and red that I know of for sure. On a car they can be a bit of an illusion because the colors are on a white background and can make the stripe look like the *white* are the stripe especially with the right colors and black and white photos.
The decals are rather crude and are pretty butt-ugly on a car. Much nicer if painted on.
I have one of these kits squired away somewhere. I had a second one that I lent to someone who never returned it (and has since dropped from the Oldsmobile Community radar).

Wow, that's cool (that Ebay auction link, NOT Kurt's story about that thief).

Too bad (or maybe its good in the sense that I won't be tempted) the stripes on auction are blue...wouldn't match my car's color anyway.
