Question: wasn't the "OLDS W-455" intake purportedly only on the late '70 and '71/'72 cars? Seems to be quite an early production date if this is true. This is the same as what my late-build '71 has......

 

Your late build 71' should not have the same date as this one 10/69.
If it does, you have a 70' intake.
Yes, the second run on 70' and the 71- 72 both have " Olds " .
Look at the part # and check yours.
Located on passenger side next to carb pad.
70' - 406115.
71-72 - 407570.
Also notice the large "A" next to the thermostat housing.
Can't say that the "A" is definitive tell tale for 71' but I have never seen it on a 70' intake. I have only seen it on a 71-72.

Agree. I find a very quick cursory glance determination for the 71-72 intake is that A to the right of the thermostat area. Definitely useful at National meets when you are looking.
