1970 Olds 12 bolt rear axle housing

Hello all,
New guy here….ok so I was given a free 12 bolt complete to use in my 70 Chevelle. Upon investigation of it, the casting on the center bottom is 402227. A 70 Olds.
i can’t use it.
its been baked, blasted, cleaned and powder coated black. Housing only.
Here’s some pics, looking to get $175.

I am located in Clawson, Mi. Near Detroit.
I can help deliver if local.

From the picture, I can't tell if it's actually an Olds (Type O -- 8.5 10 bolt ring gear w/12 bolt cover) or a Chevy (Type C -- 8.875 12 bolt ring gear,12 bolt cover) and I don't know the part numbers enough to tell that way. They look similar, with a few distinguishing characteristics. But if it was sold to you as a Chevy rear, is it possible that it actually is a Type C which was installed in Canadian-built Olds A-bodies in 1968-9 and would actually be viable if not exactly correct for your application?

I only mention this because I note your proximity to the border.

MOST of them are...
I have one that is a late 1969.. It uses the older style oil seal in the axle tube. BUT it has the 40222227 center casting
Stamped on tube Code is S7 and it is a 3.23 anti spin. used in 1969
In 1970 if you had a 323 posi This stamp / code changed to SF if not mistaken.?

Just wondering, does this housing come with the carrier bearing caps?

Thanks for your info. I jumped the gun on this axle and tossed the diff and pinion. Was it a 8.875? Don't know. It did have the pressed on bearings on the shafts with the retaing plates. It is a 12 bolt for sure.

If you go back to post #3, I think Joe confirmed for us: definitely a Type O and not right for your application, so no worries.
