So do they come cut out or am I cutting the white part out?

 

Nice, except the OEM W25 hoods were painted.

 

The white part you see is blank, nothing there. The surrounding yellow part is the "decal mask". You'll position and stick that to your hood. Then remove the white paper. I trim the yellow area very close to the edge of the part to be painted so I can see where its going on the scoop a bit easier. When you pull off the protective paper you'll see whats open is the part to be painted the stripe color.

 

This is NOT a decal. Its a decal type mask off/stencil so it makes painting the stripe easier. It takes the hassle out of laying out the stripes correctly.

Not to be a debbie downer but I got a friend who has a wall of original w25 hoods about 8 of them all original paint all of the stripes don't match each other. They are close but off. Hand laying these stripes to paint is kind of easy imo. Fine line tape and some 3\4 masking tape to keep you off the edges is all you need really.

 

These stencils are really handy. I used a set for my hood, and it was super easy and quick. I didn't use a set from jstrits, but it's the same type.

As of this evening I should have 6 more sets to sell. if demand is greater then I can make more.

 

I've done it that way and it is always a tedious task. Making sure one is done right, and then to have to do it all over again for the second scoop. Its tough sometimes to get the different points correct on the front edge. One is rounded and the other is more pointed. With these it saves on the struggle and fine line wanting to lift around the sharp corners.

I understand the OAI W-25 hoods had painted stripes, were the side stripes on the W30 or W31 ever Decals? Or were they painted on?

 

I should have clarified that I have a 1972 two-door hardtop/442 Clone

 

Sorry Allan , I meant W29 not W31. But I think you already mentioned that W 29 was not a reproduced or aftermarket decals made by any companies.

 

All the stripes on W30 and W31s were painted on.

 

I meant the W 29 stripes for a 1972 Cutlass, sorry.

 

All side stripes were paint. 72 442 steel hood treatment was a decal kit.

I am happy how mine turned out as well, even though my painter prefers not to use stencils

One thing I wasn't entirely clear on was how far back to set the stripes? I see this vary greatly on each car and wasn't sure if there is a standard dimension?

They vary but kind of a rule of thumb is to lay a quarter down at the lead egde of the scoop and the outer small stripe will rest on the quarters edge. again a rough guide.
