This is for a '72 Cutlass. The '72 Cutlass/442 turned on the AC compressor when the defroster was used, 70-71 models didn't. The "squiggly" slot shown in color in the pic below engages the compressor in DEF, NORMAL & MAX modes. 70-71 controls have a straight slot that only engages the compressor in NORMAL & MAX modes.

Wow-- very observant!-- never noticed that difference.
Anyway-- I also have the 70-71 style in similar condtion if that is the year of you car-- thanks!

FYI, not completely true, I have a 1971 cutlass that's been in the family since its 7th birthday (1978), AC engages in defrost. Car was built early in 71 production year.

AC Question

The 71 Chassis Service Manual undoubtedly describes in detail the operation of the AC in all settings.
Would have figured 71 and 72 models are very similar in operation.
