Back - drive bracket??? I've been in G.M. Parts since the '60's, and never heard of that!!
Reverse shifter arm - bolts to the side cover, and still available new! Used about $20!!
Even the reverse shifter rod is still available - from Hurst!
Too many crashes, Crash??

There's a bracket on the trans side cover for the back drive linkage.
Wouldn't that be the back drive bracket??

Dumb question!

Just curious what does a back drive bracket and arm do? Did it connect to the lock in steering column? I've had several 4-spd GM cars and I don't remember any having that. But the ones I had the trans out of were older, (67 442 and 59 vette) and had the key in the dash.

The backdrive linkage for 1969 was one year only, for 1969,and it is very common for it to be missing.Any time the transmission or clutch was serviced it rarely ever got put back on.Some people also call it reverse lockout linkage.
I parted a 69 442 4-spd 2yrs ago.The engine & trans were already gone, but oddly,I removed the lower rear seat from the car,and someone cleverly placed ALL of the linkage under there.Weird, but it sold the first day I placed it up for sale.

Bluevista - thanks for the blow-up!
Crash - sorry for the doubt!
4.070 is a group# - not a part#. Apparently there's other parts in that group.
I was at Nickey at the time, so a one year only Olds part - guess I missed!
Love learning new things in the morning - thanks!!

Went to and old trans shop today and pick up a bunch of shifters, bell housings, and Muncie cores, and one of the cores was from a 1969 Cutlass and still has the back-drive bracket on the side cover...

So I have another bracket for sale, same price, $150.00 shipped to the lower 48 states...

Thanks... Crash

That linkage is a one year only. It performed two tasks. 69 is the first year for the locking steering column, and is done via an internal mechanism, like the 70+ cars. As the car is shifted into reverse, the lower collar on the column will activate the reverse back lights. If the ignition is turned back (off)it will lock the shifter as well (68 did not have this to activate the back-up lights). 69 had binding problems with these and under warranty work the retro-fit would be the 70's version. They are available repro, but real cheesy and thin steel.
