Paint Code Delete

I have a 1970 442 convertible with a dash for the color. It is painted Rallye Red. Cowl tag for interior shows Z977. Black carpet and Parchment seats. I don’t understand what the Z refers to. Any help guys?

I can't answer the Z question. Your paint code shows a vinyl top. Does your car have a vinyl top?
That looks to have been removed and replaced to me.
How about pictures of your car?

I don't think anyone has figured out the Z yet, but many believe its interior related. Lots of ides and opinions in past discussions.

Just for clarification from no1oldsfan's entry, "67" is a convertible and "A" means a white convertible top. "977" is white/ivory bucket seats. The question I have is was rally red an available color for the 1970 4-4-2? If it was, I'd surely think the color code (73) would be there. No idea what the Z is supposed to indicate.

With an "A" after the "-" it's got a convertible top, correct? I just don't know what "A" is in 70. It's probably either black or white

"A" would be a white convertible top. That would be a stunning car, Rally Red with white trim.

There have been many threads concerning what the Z means. Nothing definitive. I am of the camp that believes it is interior related. Others think it means the car came from Canada. I have a Z car and my car came from Chicago.

Randy I have to assume that you are joking about Rallye Red being available on a 70 442. That was the only year wasn't it? My Rallye Red 70 442 had dash marks not the 73 code.

I don't know a whole lot about the '70 model year other than what it says in my little book that shows rallye red as a color. What dumbfounded me was the absence of the "73" code on the cowl plate which made me think (I know that's a problem sometimes!) that rallye red might not have been available for the A body. Is it possible this car was repainted rallye red from a special order color? The absence of the double dash is also a mystery.

Rallye Red was the last special paint order color available for 1970 from what I have read. That is one reason why you see Rallye Red cars with dash marks. This car doesn't have double dash marks because the top was/is a different color than the body

you will find " - - " (or a single dash with a vinyl or convertible top) for the paint code on 1970 Lansing built cars painted
rally red
Aegean aqua
Sebring yellow
nugget gold

the "SPECIAL" part in reference to the paint was EXTRA COST & A-body ONLY (not seasonal or limited production)

Thanks for the response. Cowl tag shows Lansing not Canada, so it is something else. Here is a picture of the car.

anyone else have an answer for the Z on the cowl tag?

More so on Rallye Red cars.

the only one of the 4 "special" colors you will find on a Lansing cowl tag is "nugget gold" 53, probably because it was an available '69 color
any of the Rallye 350s have 51-51?

any 38, 51 or 73s on a '70 Lansing tag?

more so on a "rally red" car because the color is more popular?
