Anyone know a source for a thin solvent-based liquid aluminum paint?
I have some from Sears in a 4oz glass jar (circa 1960's, part# 2122) but last year it finally separated and will not remix. Not sure what its intended purpose was then - hobby or industrial?
It is solvent based and is as thin as water. When dabbed onto metal, it spreads on its own with complete shimmery coverage, and dries in minutes. It is wonderful for doing small parts with an artist's brush. I even used Q-tips to do bolt heads long ago.
I got some similar paint in gold at Sherwin Williams 2 years ago for an antique fan resto but now they say they cannot get anything like it anymore.

Any leads are appreciated!

 

Just picked this up at the local apothecary, check out the date...but seriously it's what we used to use to paint our windmill, it's lasted nearly 40 years since last painting. Rob do you recall what the solvent was, I don't anymore.

Wow - what a find! As a powder, I bet it is still good!
The Sears paint did not list a solvent, but part of the label is missing. It said it is flammable and to avoid inhaling vapors (the latter part being hard to resist...)
The gold I got a few years back has Xylol in it (made by Sheffield Bronze). I found their web site and they do have an aluminum in liquid and powder, but they do not state solvent or water based. I need to find a source for it too.
IF that stuff is good for windmills, I think grain silos and such also. I might try some farm supply houses...

 

The EPA has put a lid on some of that stuff over the years to protect us and the environment. There area few manufacturers of gold leaf products, perhaps they also have silver.

 

The powder is indeed still ....smooooth. Like talcum powder. I probably accelerated my Alzheimer's by 20 years. Remember the aluminum pan stories of the. Late 80 early 90's??

Check with an industrial metals store, it's just powdered aluminum.
