Gas tank vent

The vent on the tank of my 1970 Cutlass Supreme is leaking fuel. This is a new vent. Am I installing it wrong? Can I plug the hoses and install a vented cap? I need to get this fixed as welare leaving Tuesday to hit a couple of stops on the power tour.

It looks right, there should be some kind of fiber, cotton like material inside it. I would think that should keep it from sloshing out the vent. John

I agree, that it's installed correct. I have replaced my original and the Fusick also. Mine just break or have fallen apart
due to age,
