engine color
Friend asked about engine color for his 1964 super 88. Is it suppose to be red?The engine is a 394 cu in. Also what should the air cleaner decal read, & would the air cleaner also be red in color? Is there a paint code or #? Where do you get a decal from? Thanks for any information. friskyjake
The engine should be red, and the air cleaner plate can be gotten from Fusick. Olds didn't use decals then. The writing on the top of the air cleaners was on a metal plate that was glued to the top of the air cleaner. There are apparently two different ones depending on whether or not the car has a 2-bbl or 4-bbl carburetor, and what the writing actually said depended on the carburetor, too, saying "Rocket" if a 2-bbl and "Sky Rocket" if a 4-bbl.
Go to www.fusick.com, download catalog 22B, and look at page 38. The 2-bbl plate is $29.50, and the 4-bbl is $36.50.
You can also get paint for this engine from Fusick. On page 9 of this same catalog at the very top of the page shows the same red color for 1961 through 1969 394, 425, and 455 engines. Even if your friend's engine doesn't need to be painted, I think this at least confirms that the color should be red.
I'm not sure about the color of the air cleaner.
