62 Cutlass F85 Wheels?

Hey all, just curious, any ideas on what wheels will fit my 62 F85?
I understand that it is a four lug set up.
Did they make a 4 lug Olds Rally style wheel?
would a stock 14 inch wheel from a 70s starfire work?
dont really want to run from a Front Wheel driver unless they fit nice
Thanks, JefF85

Jeff,

Please see my response to your original newbie post. The bolt pattern is 4x4.5", which was used on 1964-1970 six cylinder Mustangs and Falcons. There USED to be a good selection of aftermarket wheels in this bolt pattern, not so much anymore (discounting the 4x114.3mm FWD wheels). I found a used set of 14x6 slot mags from an old Mustang that are on my 62 now. The newer four-bolt cars use 4" and 4.25" bolt circles, so those don't work.

Not sure where I said these WOULDN'T work. There are a lot of cars out there with a 4 x 4.5 bolt pattern. Early Datsun 240-260-280Z cars, for example. As I noted, there are also many, many cars with the 4 x 114.3 mm bolt pattern, which is 4.5", but most of these have a large FWD offset. The early six cylinder Mustang/Falcon cars I noted are RWD and the wheels have the correct offset. The Z-cars are also RWD.

OK, apparently I was not clear in my first two posts. Yes, there are a bazillion aftermarket rims with the 4x114.3 mm bolt circle. With about a half dozen exceptions, all of them are designed for FWD cars and have somewhere between 28mm and 45mm of positive offset. Yes, they'll bolt to the 61-63 cars but the tire will be recessed in the wheel opening by 1-1.75 inches. If you like that look and the tire doesn't rub on the backside, or if you choose to run wheel spacers to bring the tire back out where it belongs, that's great.

I prefer a tire that fills the wheel opening without spacers, which I why I'm making the point about the non-availability of proper RWD wheels with zero offset. So far I've found Ansen slot mags, Centerlines and similar wheels, chrome steelies with baby moons, Minilites, and some very high dollar billet wheels. Back in the day you used to be able to get four spoke Cragar SS wheels and a whole host of other aftermarket wheels from dozens of manufacturers in the 4x4.5 bolt pattern and zero or near zero offset. If you are saying that you have a current source for such wheels, then you would be the first to have found them in decades and many folks - myself included - would be interested in this source.

adapters

Hey Joe,
What is your opinion on wheel adapters? Vision Wheel has a nice 15" wheel. Unfortunately they don't offer a 4x4.5. They have 4x4.25 with a -19 offset 15x4 which brings it out .They also offer the 15x7 4x4.25 in a zero offset. Then of course they have them in a 5 lug. The rim in question is their 521 nitro....Sharp looking but not in the lug pattern needed.

Have you contacted the manufacturer and asked if they can drill a custom bolt circle? That would be a far better solution. The problem with wheel spacers is that they need to be thick enough to retain the wheel studs for the 4.25 bolt circle. You can make spacers like that, but they probably need to be at least an inch thick. That means an extra 25mm outboard spacing on top of the 19mm built into the wheels. You really want wheels with about 25mm POSITIVE offset to accommodate the spacers. Of course, you need to get hub-centric spacers, which most are not. I spent over $300 for well made, hub-centric spacers for my dually truck so I could run wider tires without sidewalls rubbing at the back.

Not a spacer, an adapter

Yeah, I got it. Those are like the ones I have for my truck. It's still a spacer. It's also not hub-centric, apparently, though your desired wheels may not be either. More to the point, these are 2" thick, plus the -19mm (about 0.75") offset on the wheels, puts those wheels 2.75" further outboard. Not gonna happen on a 62, especially in the back and especially if you want decent tires on them. Again, ask the manufacturer (NOT the vendor) if you can get a custom bolt pattern drilled. I'm willing to bet you can, and not for much additional money.

And before someone suggests redrilling the hubs, you really can't on the front. The front hubs are not uniform in thickness - they have thicker spots where the wheel studs are pressed in. If you clock the pattern 45 degrees to drill new holes, you're in the thinner part of the hub.

Frankly, before I messed with those 2" thick spacers, er, ADAPTERS, I'd just do five lug conversion on the car. Cost will probably be about the same as for the spacers. Again, the FIRST thing I would do is ask about custom drilled wheels that have the correct pattern in the first place.

I was just using those as an example.

Again, any adapter will push the wheels outboard. The wheels you want ALREADY have 3/4" negative offset that pushes then outward, without any spacer. I have zero offset 14x5 slot mags on my 62 with no spacers/adapters and 205/70-14 tires and they have less than 1" of clearance to the wheel opening lip on the back. Do the math - or, buy the expensive wheels and tires, have them mounted, see for yourself they won't clear, and then find out that you can't return them once tires have been mounted. Your call.

He provided the info in Post #8. It's the first link that pops up on Google.

Is it the wheel that takes the "poverty" caps?

Here is a set of 4 -lug wheels I have, don't know if you would be interested. They are Ford wheels, so I'm not sure if they will fit.

If you read his posts, the wheels he wants are the same 4.25" bolt circle as those later Ford wheels you have, so that doesn't solve the problem. The 61-63 F-85 uses a 4.5" bolt circle, which is the same as the 1960s Ford six cylinder cars (Falcon, Comet, early Mustang). Ford stopped using that pattern in 1970. The Pinto/Mustang II/Fox body use the 4.25" circle.

Legendary Wheel has them for early mustang. Perfect offset. 15 x 6. 215/60-15 no problem. Wheel Vintiques has steel wheels.

You all DO realize that the OP wants a specific style wheel that happens to not be offered in the correct bolt pattern, right? He's not looking for just any 4 x 4.5" wheel.

I don't read it like that at all Joe. He was just looking for something that would fit, similar to factory. I put Oldsmobile center caps on these.
I know this is an old thread but these wheels just came out last year or so and its good info for the hobby.
I agree with you 100% against using modern front drive wheels because the offset is terrible for these cars and the wheels don't look right. I found many people asking me if these are original Oldsmobile wheels.

That's because he dredged up an old thread instead of starting a new one and you were reading the first post in the old thread. The new part starts at post #8. Yet another example of why it's a BAAAD idea to resurrect a five year old thread. Here's Post #8.

I run 205/70-14s on my 62 and my friend runs 215/60-15s with no problems. My slot mags have slight negative offset, which pushes the tires outboard. My friend runs stock steel 15" wheels with zero offset. Your 225/55-16s are about half an inch taller and half an inch wider that the 215/60-15s. Gonna be close and require very careful wheel offset selection.

I got lucky and found a zero offset. Unfortunately the lugs they sent are 1/2-20 and I need 7/16-20, and left hand thread to boot.

For what? The wheels I have are early Mustang six cylinder wheels that have the same 4 x 4.5" bolt circle. Bolted right up.

No, I used the brute force method. Pushed the old studs out without machining the swaged lip, oversized the holes as a result, and found Dorman studs with a larger knurl that pressed right into the now larger hole.
