Well I didn't have plans on purchasing this vehicle, but it popped up on Craigslist this summer, and I thought it was a nice car, but it was not in the budget. Well I seen it listed at the beginning of this month, and it was still out of my range. Something told me to make contact with the seller. I did make contact and we e-mailed back in forth for a few days. Basically just discussing the car.

Well he asked if I was interested, and I told him I was, but I told him he might want to wait for another buyer, because I did not think I could get to what he was asking.

A couple days later he told me he had buyer, and the guy was coming with the cash the next day. I received an e-mail from the seller the following day stating he had sold the Omega, but he thanked me for giving him information he did not know about the car.

Well about mid-day on the 7th of December he called me, and told me the guy backed out of the deal. The seller told me to come up to Wisconsin and look at the car. I reminded him about the money situation, and he said " its your if you come and get it ". I actually had been saving to purchase a 350 Olds engine to sit in my 86 Cutlass.

I spoke to my wife, who gave me the blessings. I rented a U-haul transport, and hooked it up to my SUV and drove 92 miles into Wisconsin. Once we arrived I knew right away I wanted this car! My wife even said we have to buy this.

This Omega was just awesome. It was in near perfect shape. Three small surface rust spots that you barely notice, slight sagging (headliner). The trunk has no rust or evidence of repair. The floor boards are super solid, and the underside is rust free. The only thing that I did not like was the 250 Inline 6 engine (original 44,000 miles), but it is very clean. 3.08 rear end.

Now I have to save more funds for the OLDS 350 that I was intending to purchase with the money I used for the car. Now I have more justification (wife), to purchase more OLDS parts.

This car came from Van Nuys, CA about two years ago with its original owner. I made contact with her, and she told me that she traded it in at a GM/ Buick dealership. One of their employees ended up with the car, who in turn sold it to the guy I purchased it from (04/2010). I was advised the Omega sports its original paint, interior, and has had no major mechanical work done to it.

Now I know this isn't super great find i.e; 1970 W-30, 1969 H/O etc, but this is a nice car that is rare in its own sense. Yeah people knock it as Nova clone,( better front end and interior IMO). Chevy guys call the beloved Cutlass a Chevelle wanna be, which is off base IMO!

I always tell em my 72 Cutlass "S" will blow its tires into their windshields, but they never want to put it to the test. When I had my first Omega people would always give positive feedback, and say they have never seen this car before, and how refreshing it is to see something new at a local cruise or car show. In Chicagoland there are a lot of Oldsmobile!! I think Cookman would be proud of this Omega purchase

 

Nice ride. Hope you have lots of fun with it. Now you have to find another 350 or 455.

And for the love of god ditch those Chevy wheels. Those will not help at all with people calling it a Nova.

Aye Aye... Yeah Randy I'm behind you on that. I looked the wheels up online and I guess they are for 67 Corvettes/Camaro. I don't know crap about either car, so once I decide on either cleaning up my SSII wheels or maybe picking up some Rocket Wheels to replace the Chevy wheels on it now. I rather destroy them, but I'll probably will sell them at the BOPC Swap Meet to be held in St. Charles,IL the last week end of Feb 2010. I'm sure I could use the money to fund my projects or buy the wife something as a diversion for more parts without her screaming at me.

Yeah Josh you called it first, so I'll hold on to it for ya!! I'm sure we could figure out something creative. BTW there's a guy that has a two 65 Cuttys' a little west of ya on C-list. He's trying to sell both, but will separate, said he might take trades.

Glad you stayed in touch with the guy via email! Nice buy, and a very clean car. Very neat you were able to contact the original owner and get details. Doesn't look like you need to do too much to it at all. Congratulations!

Owner has it for sale. I never seen one mocked up like this. Seller says he has all the original paperwork that includes all the options that are in it. Also the black one is for sale on the left coast. Never seen one like this either. Pretty creative.

 

Nice car! My Dad had a 74 Pontiac Ventura. Every time I see one of these it reminds me of him. Wish I had that car.

 

We all know that just because GM is/was the parent company for Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Buick, Pontiac and because Chevrolet produced more vehicles does not mean that every model that crossed name-brands was designed by Chevrolet. That is a preposterous assumption only used to make the person who declares that feel better. I always had less respect for someone who did this, belittling others to elevate himself. Can't people, and cars, stand on their own merit?

 

I totally agree with ya Dan!. You know most Chevy guys always have something negative to say, as some believe Chevy made GM!

Nah. Ditch 'em. They don't look that great on a Chevy IMHO and they sure don't look good on anything else, though you'd never believe that seeing all the non-Chevrolet cars that have them.

Omegas never got the respect they deserved. Had Olds gone performance route with them as Chevy did with the Nova, they'd have had a formidable little street screamer.

 

Nice car, can you tell me what color that is? here's my '73 and the cowl tag says it's 56 which is Chamios Gold but it really looks like 51 Omega yellow. of course the car has been sitting in the CA sun for the last ten years not driven until I just purchased last week. mine was made in Van Nuys as well.

 

As I said in the other thread, can you check out and maybe photograph so we can see a part of the car that is painted but has not been exposed to the sun? The underside of the trunk lid or the trailing edge of one of the doors where the lock striker is come to mind as possibilities. Or the door hinge areas. One of these presumably should still retain the look it had when the car left the factory. It would be interesting to know if perhaps these areas are a little lighter in color.

 

Hello again jaunty75, yes I did that, here's a pick of the door jam. I was hoping that 815Cutlass1972 would tell me that his car is also 56 Chamios Gold so I had a good look at that color if I decide to go in that direction.

Well, that does look a little more yellow, which is not surprising. However, it's hard to argue with the paint code on the cowl plate. If it says the color is chamois gold, then that's what it is unless the car was repainted after leaving the factory. There's no reason to doubt the accuracy of the cowl plate.

I'm guessing that, if you could see two cars side by side, one chamois gold and the other Omega yellow, the difference would be obvious, and the Omega yellow would be a whole lot more yellow.

 

yes that was my main reason for looking at the color, it didn't really care about which code number it was, I was trying to figure out if this car had been repainted after the factory, possibly after being in a major accident.
