Picked up a 62 Starfire

Decide to pick up another Olds project. Bought a 1962 Starfire hardtop. Bought it from fellow member Electra483 (Paul). Had to have it shipped from Tucson to Santa Fe. It arrived this weekend. Here are a couple of picture of it at It's new home.

First thing I had to do before I start working on it is see if it runs. So I cleaned and gapped the plugs, set the points, and loosened the timing. Put some gas in it and had my son crank it for me while I did a rough timing adjustment. Started right up. Here is a short video of the start up (actually the second start up). It had a noisy lifter, but that cleared up after a the oil made it's way through the engine.

Now that I know it runs good time to start. Need to clean up the engine compartment, so this hood liner will have to go.

Looks like they had it covered with a plastic tarp of some kind. Will need to strip the top and spray some epoxy primer.

Already on the hunt for the missing or bad parts.
Will keep posting updates.

Will be interested in following this project, and project it is. In what kind of shape is the interior?

Interior all there, just needs to be reupholstered. No problem there I have a buddy that runs an upholstery shop. Only thing missing was the console tach (already bought one on e-bay. )The body is actually in awesome shape. Only one spot of rust on drivers quarter. Now comes the task of finding replacement moldings for the ones with dings.

I love 62 Starfires and I am really glad you saved this one. What color are you going to do it?

That looks like an interesting 'breather' on the drivers side side valve cover. I can't see much, but it seems like its loaded with options like A/C and a power trunk release. Shouldn't they have a bigger shroud by the radiator for A/C cars? Good luck and finally a new non-Cutlass build on here!

Glad you saved this thing! I know Paul didn't want to part it out! Would've been in my driveway if shipping didn't almost double the cost of the car!

Paul was an awesome guy to deal with.

I got lucky on the shipping. I posted the shipping on Uship for bids. they were all $880 +. When out of the blue, someone bid $450. I contacted him and found out he was picking up a 69 Camaro in Santa Fe. So he was driving from Phoenix to Santa Fe with an empty trailer (car was in Tucson). Made the deal, and it was in my driveway the next morning. I had originally planed on going for car myself (about 7 hour drive).

Nice, glad to see it turned
back up on CO.

Looking forward to your progress.
Need some interior shots...
Good luck with her. Going to be sharp.

I was also trying to figure out how to get it to Ontario and keep it within my budget, just so you know I'm the person who is reproducing the aluminum side moldings for these cars, I was trying to buy the convertible from Paul but couldn't make that work either. I'll get one when the time is right,I have too many projects on the go right now.Good luck and I think you scored a great car there that won't require alot of work to bring it back to a quality Starfire.

I've see you web page. Nice stuff your making there. We'll see if the budget Allows for some new trim.

Redoldsman, I was thinking gold with a root beer roof. But that can also change any time I see a color I like on the road.

I think they look best in solid black. I had a friend in high school and his mom had a black one (brand new) with red leather interior. I still remember that car and still think it was one of the prettiest cars I ever saw. That side trim really stands out against the black. It was a good thing for you that I don't have a place for this car or I would have bought it. The red that came on these cars is pretty too.

Wow very cool car, Id love to have one. My first driver was a hand me down 62 98 4door, that car was a mile long. I had to take my driving test in it, didnt do too good on parallel parking I bumped the pole but the officer knew it was a long car so he let it slide....LOL. It was a kind of pinkish metallic with maroon interior, power everything. For a big car it was pretty fast! That 394 ran strong. The trans developed a problem after a while, when i would stand on the gas the trans would slip and the motor would wind up to about 4-5 thousand RPM then it would catch HAHA i won a couple of races because of that. Good memories!!!
Good luck with the car ill be following your build, i think silver with a black top would look sharp.

Haven't really decided on color yet. Like I said I'll be driving around one day and a car will pass me that just grabs my attention. I tend to drift towards the different colors. Found a guy ( on this forum with some of the trim I need), found the tach that was missing on e-bay. So things are moving along. I'm gonna stop after work for a gallon of the white epoxy primer. I'll start sealing the panels that just need sanding (car doesn't need a lot of body work .

Certainly it is your car and you should do it to suite yourself. I thought it looked like a really straight car with only surface rust. I am glad you are doing a thread on here for the car.

I'll be sure to post as i go. I had a couple of threads on my 50 Olds build. first in lime green (see love the of the wall colors). Then when I went with a more traditional light green. Check them out.

Now I remember your car when it was lime green. Cool car but I like the traditional light green better. Did you sell it?

No, I had a buyer with money in hand. And I changed my mind. I love the light green also. I am selling my 60 Chevy Apache instead. ( building an addition to house, need some extra cash)

I made an album of truck if you know anyone looking. Looking to get 13,000 for it.
