I'm looking for an oil dipstick for an 1965 Starfire with a 425 CID engine. I currently have a Dr Rebuild one in there but not sure it's long enough to accurately check the oil level. The one I have measures 18 inches- tip to handle. It also has a pair of rivets attaching the handle to the dipstick. These rivets loosen over time and I have to keep repairing them. Any help would be appreciated
Next time you do an oil change, verify your dipstick and/or mark your dipstick at the proper levels. You can use a file or heavy scribe to mark the lines. Use steel rivets.

You might try a salvage yard with a lot of old stuff.

I had this same issue with my '67 Delta, which also has a 425, when I discovered that the dipstick wasn't original. Until you find an actual 425 dipstick, you can make any aftermarket stick work just fine. According to the '67 chassis service manual, the dipstick on the 425 is 18 and 13/32 inches in length. Buy one at least this long at the auto parts store. They're readily available. They have adjustable caps so you can set it to the correct length, cap to tip.
Change the oil, and refill it with 4 quarts. Let the oil settle, insert the dipstick, note the level and mark it with a file or something. Then add the last quart, let the oil settle, note the level and again mark it. Now you have a serviceable dipstick with "add" and "full" marks on it.
$9.99 at Autozone, but you probably have to order it. I bought the one I use off the display rack at Pepboys.

You'll have to start the engine with 4 qts to get the 1 qt low mark and then add the last qt for the full mark. Or you can start with 3 qts, make a mark, then add the 4th-5th, start the engine and make a mark.
