Hello Olds enthusiasts. I just bought an 1978 Omega SX and am real excited about my new toy. Its a fairly clean car. This is my first Omega. I am very familiar with g body cutlass but I will be asking alot of questions to get my Omega looking and running right.

 

Exterior pics. Body is in good shape. I need a rear bumper though.

 

Interior is clean. Im digging the console. Does need headliner.

Looks really nice! I don't think an Olds motor ever came in that generation X-body, but I "think" you can use T/A mounts to make it work......but don't quote me on that.
To use the T/A mounts you would need SBC frame mounts and the T/A engine brackets.....if that's a viable option.

 

I purchased a 330 to put in it. I got frame mounts from a 307. Can i use them? I heard all the v8 olds frame mounts will fit to the engine.

 

All Olds frame mounts will fit the engine, but NOT the frame. The frame mounts are chassis-specific.

You need the frame mounts from a 1975-1979 Omega with the Olds 260. Use Anchor P/N 2328 motor mounts with those frame mounts.

I'm guessing the Omega mounts will be tough to find. The X-car subframe is very similar to the Camaro/Firebird subframe. You might have better luck getting the motor brackets from a 403 Trans Am and using the matching Chevy-style clamshell frame mounts.

 

Thanks Joe. I was completely heading in the wrong direction regarding the mounts. I will start the hunt to find a trans am mounts and brackets. Any leads anyone?

Yup, that's them. They show up on ebay regularly. The flat strap bolts to the three motor mount bolt holes on the Olds block. The "C"-shaped piece bolts to the flat strap and fits over the Chevy-style clamshell frame mount. The frame mount is Anchor P/N 2387, a whole $3.50 apiece from RockAuto:

 

So I was correct about being able to use the T/A mounts...good.

 

Sorry, Randy, I missed your first post when I wrote mine. Yes, you were correct about the T/A mounts.

Unfortunately, you were incorrect about the (non) use of Olds motors in these cars.
The 260 was a factory option.

 

Oh hey ...I was just happy I was correct about the T/A mounts. I thought I remembered that the X body front sub-frame was really close to the F-body frame and use the same mounts.
I had forgotten about the 260 (even though I have owned 2 of them) and never even put it together in my brain that it was available in the Omega.

 

Yeah, the 260 has that effect on people.

Im am researching that the 78 SX came with a 350 or 200c transmission. The stock engine thats in car is a 231v6. How can I find out myself? I picked up a 200r4 but if car has 350 trans in it, I will keep the 350 in until I get 200r4 rebuilt. I will be pulling the 231 out if a few weeks to put in 330.

You can pretty much bet on the trans being a TH200 with that V6, but to be certain, jack the car up and look at the trans pan. Number 2 in the photo below is a TH200 pan - note the 11 bolts. Number 3 is a TH350 with 13 bolts.

 

My 78 SX V6 came with a TH350.

 

I will be jacking it up on Thursday to see what the trans is. Thanks for the info. I hope it is a 350 like yours copper128.

How'd did you find out what tranny you had

 

I found out by checking the pan. Joe posted a pic with the pan sizes and patterns in this thread. Scroll up and the info is all there.

 

A few years ago I bought a rocker moulding I thought was for my 74 Omega But is lighter and about 7/8 of an in. shorter.I suspect it's for a newer year omega.Could you give me a measurement on yours?

i did and apparently i have a th350 too

 

I just happened to have mine handy. The 75-79 rocker moulding is just about 77-1/2" long (2-door). Also the face is just about 3" wide, with about 3/8" mounting flange on the bottom.

 

Mine are 77 1/8 here is a pic beside one off my 74 Omega which is 77 7/8.Any Idea what they could be off of

Has anyone ever compared the two sub frames before? The camaro and the X-body 75-79? They seem almost identical.

railguy, maybe a 4 door car or a car without the wheel well trim vs with or even a K-body cadillac? Just guessing a little.

 

The 4 door x body and 2 door x body are the same wheelbase.The Camaro and X body cars used the same sub frame in some years I think.I pretty sure the trim piece I have is from a 75-78 Omega whether it fits any thing else I don't know.I think it's aluminum does anyone know how to tell?I know it's not magnetic but neither is the stainless one.The screw holes are the same as the 73-74.
