Need Advice on 2GC Carb Rebuild
Hey, I'm going to rebuild the Rochester 2GC on my Starfire. This will be the first carb rebuild I have attempted (I thought a 2 bbl would be a good one to start with). I'm going to soak the parts in carb cleaner.
My first question is: Do I need to remove the power piston when I am soaking the air horn? The reason I ask is that it is staked in place and I would rather not remove it if I don't have to.

Thanks,

I want to do it right.
Your answer sounds like I need to remove it and restake when I have it clean.
I notice that power pistons are sold on carb rebuild parts sites. Is this a commonly replaced item or do they rarely wear out? The carb only has 65,000 miles on it.

your power piston should be removed for cleaning. they don't wear out.
you remove it by pushing it down and letting it snap back up. it will unstake itself after you do this a few times. it will come out as one piece, no other parts will fall/shoot out, so no worries. when you stake it back in place, do a good job of it. i usually stake it in 4 or 5 places, depending on how the stake marks i make, look. you don't want it falling out.

That's really the only tricky part about a 2G/C rebuild. That was one of the first carbs I ever rebuilt and I was surprised at how easy it was. I got better mileage once I switched to a Q-Jet, but I love how simple they are and easy to maintain. Good luck!
