f85 fluids
Hi all!!
I want to flush my trans fluid and my coolant for my 61 f85 with a 215 v8 just wondering what fluids I should use? Guess it would help that it's automatic.and also how do I go on changing the trams fluid....can I drain it then add it right to the dipstick tube? And should I change it while running? Thanks I'm advance!!!

You check the transmission fluid level with the engine running, but you change fluid with the engine off. Yes, new fluid is added through the dipstick tube. The '61 service manual, available for free at wildaboutcars.com, calls for "Hydramatic Fluid," "Type A" fluid, or "AQ-ATF-number-A" fluid. Dexron III is, I believe, the current version of this fluid.
If you drain the transmission by dropping the pan, it takes 5 quarts to refill. If you drain by sucking the fluid out of the dipstick tube, it takes 4 quarts to refill. If the transmission is completely overhauled, it takes 7 quarts to refill.
The radiator fluid capacity depends on how the car is equipped as these cars could not only have been bought with or without air-conditioning, they could also have been bought without heaters.
With A/C, no heater - 11 quarts
Without A/C, no heater -10.5 quarts
If the car has a heater, add 1.5 quarts to the above figures.
