True? trying to know what I'm in for before I start the project to replace the heater core. Do you have to remove the right fender?

 

Do you have a factory service manual for this car? It would greatly help you if you did.

According to that manual, no, the fender is not removed to get the heater core out. I don't think fender removal has ever been required on any Oldsmobile. In some situations, getting at one of the attaching nuts on the firewall requires drilling a hole through the passenger-side front fender well, but that's it.

On your car, the heater case, which contains the heater core, is removed from the passenger compartment, and that requires removing the glovebox, disconnecting the various wires, vacuum lines, and ductwork from the heater case, draining the coolant below the level of the core and removing the heater hoses, removing the heater case attaching nuts from the firewall side, removing the case from the car, and the removing the core from the case.

While you're at it, pick up a '66 Fisher Body service manual, too, as there are many things in there that aren't in the chassis manual, especially if you need to work on anything like doors, windows, seats, body panels, and things like that.

What I've listed above is only a sampling of what turned up when I searched on "1966 Oldsmobile Service manual". Shop around as prices vary amongst the various sellers.

I don't think Olds ever had model-only manuals. Through the late '70s or early '80s, I think, there was just a chassis service manual covering all Oldsmobile models and a Fisher Body Manual covering all GM models.

In the '80s, Olds had manuals for the different body-styles. A manual for the Cutlasses. Another for the full-size cars. Then, even later, it was more platform-specific. I had a '98 Cutlass once, and the service manual I bought covered '98 Cutlass and '98 Malibu.

I know I don't have these dates exactly right, but you get the idea. In the era your car was built, there was a service manual and a body manual. There were probably other manuals as well, such as an assembly manual, perhaps an electrical troubleshooting manual, maybe a parts manual. I don't know for sure, but there were other manuals during those years in addition to the chassis and body manuals.

 

A Chilton manual has its uses, but there is no substitute for a factory-produced service manual. You won't find more detail or more info anywhere else. And with one of those ebay sellers offering the '66 chassis manual for all of $8.00 plus $5.00 shipping, why even consider buying anything else.
