remove heater core on 64 cutlass

hey olds nation! heater core is leaking bad. how do i get to the heater core to remove and replace on my 64 conv cutlass. thanks

First off if you plan to work on your car much I would strongly recommend you purchase a 1964 Oldsmobile Chassis Service Manual. I couldn't find a used set so I purchase a reprinted set on ebay for about $75. I find them invaluable for the photos, sketches and instructions through the text.

I've not done a 1964 heater core but just recently did a 1967. First remove the hoses from the firewall side of the heater core. Then I put the front on jack stands and removed the right front tire. I then removed the inner fender well. from there I can easily see the studs coming through the firewall with speed nuts on them. remove each of those and then the underdash housing should be loose. It will still have the control cables attached, so gently pull it loose from the firewall and ease it to the floorboard. You will then be able to see the heater core with a clip on each end to hold it in place. You may be able to swap the core out there, or you may want to remove the control cables and pull the heater box out of the car to clean it before re-installing. Somewhat of a pain to do, but not difficult just tedious.

Also, while your at it you may want to inspect the heater blower motor, that's on the engine compartment side heater box tucked up under the fender.

I may have photos of various parts if anything is unclear let me know and I'll see what I can come up with. John

This heater core comes out from the dash side. It is in the case that comes right out once you have the five nuts removed from the firewall, engine side. The service manual makes you think it comes out from the engine side, bit it does not! You do have to drill a 1" hole in the fender well dimple to get at the fifth nut. Good luck finding the dimple. mine was very subtle. to locate the dimple feel the nut with your hand, and then guess the spot on the wheel side, you'll find it quicker that way.
