I'm about to attempt to clean up a 3800 (Series 1), as it has never been done and it is NASTY. I've heard various stories on what to cover with plastic bags, etc....then have heard from a detail guy that covering isn't necessary assuming water isn't hitting one area constantly for more than a few seconds. Any tips from experience (especially on a 3800)?

I'm going to spray some degreaser on it first and let it sit for a little bit before breaking out the water.

 

I'm with your detail guy. I've not pressure washed a 3800, but the principles are the same. Cover the inlet. Don't spray directly into the inlet or on the coil packs. Don't blast on one area continually. Otherwise, the Weatherpack connectors used on these motors are very good at keeping out the elements. Worst case, the plug wires or coils get wet and the car won't start until they dry out.

 

i'm sure you know but the engine should be cool to do this.
