Adding A/C
Adding A/C
I want to add an aftermarket A/C to my 71 442 w/455. Any recommendations on what brand or where I should purchase it from? Also looking for two lapbelts female side, mine are missing. Any ideas? Thanks
I've installed both Vintage Air and Classic Air kits, I was happy with both.
The Gen IV VA (electronic controls) is a pretty high tech unit and costs a couple hundred more than the CA unit. The only downside to the CA cable operated universal unit is that there's no separation between the defrost and heat ducts. The controller simply shifts airflow between 4 dash ducts and 4 heat/defrost ducts.
Neither makes a direct kit for a 68-72 cutlass, so when I wanted to put one in my 72, I went with the simpler CA universal kit. You can adapt the original AC controls to work with the CA unit.
If you want any info, feel free to contact me. I have pics of the install too.

You mentioned the with the CA kit you can adapt that to the original controls. My car does not have factory A/C. I was looking to just adding an underdash unit. Get's a little hot here in Florida.
I think the non-AC cars have 3 lever control, the AC 2 lever. You would only use 2 levers hot/cold and dash/heater. The control levers are the only thing you keep from the old system.
Personally, I dont like the look of the under dash models.
Better hurry, I was in FL last month and already used the AC.

A/c
Both controls on a 69 have only 2 control *****. They are different as to what you have. A/C or not. The non air is mark Heat and defrost on the A/C one. It is marked Heat, defrost, vent, normal and recirculate. That is the top lever. The botom is marked. Cool or warm.
