'77 Windshield Washer Motor

The windshield washer fluid pump on my '77 442 does not appear to be working although the wipers do work. I am unable to hear any noise from the washer fluid pump. So I am hoping to purchase a new pump, but couldn't understand under what circumstances I should buy a repair kit as opposed to a whole new pump. Any thoughts? They are both available at Advance Auto but the repair kit is like $7 while the reproduction assembly has some negative reviews...
Also, does the wiper motor run both the wiper and the washer fluid pump?
Any help is greatly appreciated

Yes, the wiper motor runs both the wipers and the pump. There is a solenoid that activates a linkage that engages the pump when you press the WASHER button. Have someone do this while you listen to the wiper motor under the hood. If you hear a click when the WASHER button is pressed, the solenoid is working and the problem is probably just the need for an inexpensive pump rebuild kit. If you don't hear the click, then either the solenoid is bad or the wiring or switch is bad. Also, be sure the hose from the tank isn't plugged. I've had white deposits build up in the hose and prevent fluid flow.

Thanks, Joe that answers my question. I know the hose isn't plugged cause I just replaced it, and I also pumped fluid the whole way to the windshield to prime the system. So I'll listen for the solenoid engaging... Now that I understand the system, it should be an easy fix Thanks, again.

Did you check the hose inside the tank that's connected to the cap? How about the screen on the end of that hose? I've seen those get plugged also.

Yeah, I made sure to clean out that screen thing so I know its not that. I'm pretty sure its the solenoid so I'll probably just replace the whole unit...
