1968 Cutlass S Windshield

Hello,

I'm getting my bodywork done on my car and had the option to take out the old factory antenna and am thinking of installing a windshield with it built in is there a year that has this built in that I can buy and also would this hurt the value of my car? As I see all those rusted antennas and would like a cleaner look. Also should I paint it factory to retain the most value or does it really matter? Thanks

John

70-72 used windshield antennas, but I don't think you'd ever be happy with it. They were notorious for poor reception and picking up electrical noise from wipers and ignition. Plus you have to have the pigtail from windshield base to the radio. That might be a trick to find now plus any bodywork needed to install it.

Antenna masts are stainless steel which does not rust.

Concur with RocketRaider. My '70 GTO has the windshield antenna and AM and FM reception on it is lousy. The passenger fender manual (or quarter power) mounted antenna is much better, in my opinion.

Paint is your choice. Personally, if the car is factory correct, I would keep it in its original color.

hidden antenna

Have anyone used these that they sell on ebay? I was wondering if they work as good as they say. As I don't like the mast on the fender and would like a antenna that is hidden that keeps the car clean. Have you seen many cars with the factory Silver Green?

I agree, if the car is factory original I would keep it the same color. As far as antennas go I guess it's up to you (as is the paint since it is your car.) Personally I would keep it all original but that's just me.

I struggle with what color I was going to paint my car. In my mind I changed the color of the car several times. When it came time to buy the paint, the shop owner suggested that I paint the orginal color. That is what I did. Also just a couple weeks ago I had a new front windshield installed with the built in antenna. The car did come that way. I do not know how good the reception is because the radio is not in there yet.

I actually did the windshield antenna swap on my first 442 - a 1968. Mine worked fine. Note that you will need the special coax wire with the feedthrough that goes in the cowl at the center bottom of the windshield.
