I know......, its not an Olds. However,trying to help a buddy who is even less computer proficient than me sell what he tells me is a 1965 Chevy 409 engine. I plan to put the engine on Ebay next week but wanted to offer here first. By the way, my friend drives a 1955 Chevy with a 1965 Cutlass front clip, 455, Tri Carb, and nitrous. He believes in integration . The motor is in Chico, CA. It is out of a Chevy truck. It appears to have never been apart, but cannot verify this. The code on the head is TOII8XXG and the code on the back of the engine is 3857656 GM4. The motor turns over .He will sell the motor and flywheel (excluding the bell housing and trans ) for $ 3500 and will assist with shipping, to be paid by the buyer. If you have questions, send me your name and phone # and I will pass on to my buddy.

I have a couple of "Chevrolet by the Numbers" books, by Alan L Colvin. His 65-69 book says the casting # on this block, 3857656 is a 65 passenger car block and is a 409, horsepower from 340-400.
He says this book is to identify parts for passenger cars, so I imagine it could also have been used for other purposes, maybe trucks, but I really do not know a thing. I'm just telling what the book says.

 

I don't know what the numbers say but I guarantee that air cleaner is not from a passenger car.

Original poster suggested the owner of that engine "wasn't a slave to stock". Same is true of many other people. So if it came out of a truck, that may simply mean that is what it was last installed in.

Can't speak to the asking price, but I bet there's someone with a '65 Impala somewhere who'd want it bad.

Maybe not in 65, but I think they DID put 409s in trucks.

YNotes: While this was mostly used for 1965, some may have been used late 1964. This number was used for both car & truck applications. Truck blocks would have reliefs cut into the cylinder walls to lower compression. yah, that's a 409, probably out of a truck.

409 was quietly dropped early in the model year and my sources say only 282 were installed in passenger cars before they were replaced by the 396, so they're pretty rare. For the right guy with an original 65 409 car that's had its W-block replaced with a treefittyfoboltmain, this could be a good score although I think $3500 is about $2500 too high for an engine of unknown condition that has been stored outside.

Agreed it does look more like a truck application.

There was an idiot kid here who had an original 1965 Impala SS 409 car, handed down from his grandpa, and as soon as he got it the first thing the little dumbass did was yank the 409, and get a high mileage 454 out of a truck and stick it in there. He scrapped the 409. His reason? "I don't like the way those valve covers look."

My daddy always said I was eat up with the dumb ***. He never met Mike.

 

A 65 Impala with a 409 is a pretty rare car. They did not make many of them and then the 396 took over.

 

Thanks guys for your input. My friend says he got the motor from two guys who pulled it from a 2 ton Chevy truck that had been sitting for years. They thought that because it was in a truck it was a 348. It looks like the post got moved (as it probably should have). Can some one tell me which forum it is now in ? Thanks, John
