Hotchkiss M201 engine swap

Looking at buying a cheap Hotchkiss M201 - basically a ****** MB made in France (this particular one in 1958).

It comes with a flathead ****** Go-devil 2.2 L straight 4, with pretty poor power and a 3 speed. The vehicle is going to be used for off-roading, so I'd like a little more power, and preferably another gear or two.

But, my main concern is appearances, and especially sound - can I make it sound like the original motor, even when it's not a flathead? I'd be perfectly fine with putting another straight 4 in it.

Anybody have a suggestion? :P

Video for reference of sound.

I don't know anything about your engine but that is a very nice Jeep.

Sadly that's a real MB and not the one I'm looking at. But yes, a very nice one indeed.
