Good yrs 454 chev

I'll be getting this sweet ride at some point from a relative. Has a 327 in atm. I'm going to start looking for a 454 for it. I've gathered pre '75 is fine. What about the newer efi motors say mid '90s... Do they have crap heads n Pistons too? Inter web said first half of 86' was a good engine in the tonners.. Going to stay iron head atm. Just looking for a starting point... May go after market pistons/can at some point. Seems Chevy crap is cheaper than olds lol.

What's your budget? Every so often, in the WI area, I find BBC motors that go into the 9s for around $3500. Hell, my buddy finds motors for his race car that goes 8.40s for around $5k-$6k.

A sbc to bbc is a very simple and straight forward swap. There are crate motors available for most any budget. Craigslist, Ebay, Racingjunk.com, are good places to look. Do your homework and check the engines thoroughly before purchase.

On a side note, you may wayt to think about front springs and a good radiator as part of your budget.

My budget? As little as possible lol. At this point i'm just going to buy a big block and put it on the shelf. The 327 that is in there has been bored and cammed. It's probably plenty healthy. But someday I'd like to put a big block in there. I've been on some other Chevy forums and everyone has their opinions. I just wanted to see if anyone here had any personal experience with them. Thanks for the link btw.

i still have my 66ss i bought in 1979 my junior yr of school.numbers matching 396/325hp auto,if it was me i would look for a 1970 as they had the high nickel content.i just happen to have one BUT not for sale.i have had it for damn near 30 yrs,was in my 4x4 pickup til it rusted away now it sets awaitng a body.earlier the better and come about 77 they went to really small ports in the heads so earlier you get the better.and yes you will need front springs as they are heavy.and if your gonna use headers they are a PIA to get in

I have found a complete 1978 camper for $500. Th-400 Trans and the gen set even works. Runs and drives! At that price I'll just buy some decent heads. Fair amount of older used Chevy parts in my area if you watch Craig's list close. The guy is going to get me the casting numbers so I can research it a bit. I did find a late 60's chevlle engine for a grand but it's in Florida...
