83 Suburban using 100LL

Hey everyone. My Suburban is a big block and I use it to tow quite a bit. I have the opportunity to get some avgas for it and thought I might so as to give it an extra little punch.

It doesn't have cats and it runs fine on 87, and it runs fine on 93 when I'm towing. Seems to run a little hot but it could just be me since the temp gauge doesn't work.

So even though it runs fine I'd like to help it out as much as possible, and higher octane fuel might work. Actually I have a couple other older cars that could benefit from this as well.

If not avgas, what about the high test stuff Sunoco sells for race cars?

Thanks much.

Mike

Avgas has no more energy than 87 octane. If you're towing without detonation (pinging) problems, higher octane wont make any difference.
Save your money.

If you can get the 100LL for nothing (sump fuel), get it & run it. Things have changed in recent years but tanks get sumped, planes are defueled & the gas is just waste that has to be paid to have removed. You would probably need an inside connection to get at it though. I did it for years & ran it in 2 cars + house on Jet-A, just had to "harvest" it into 55 gal drums & bring home. Not exactly politically correct or legal to transport I would imagine but I did what I had to do. Regs & procedures have been tightened much since 9/11.

My 12.5:1 70 SS loved that stuff, 71 Cutlass (stock 4v 350) couldn't have cared less but had no aversion to it. I still have an aversion to pump gas after smelling that sweet light gas for years & then going back to heavy, oily, stinky pump gas! Maybe it is just the price that makes it repulsive.

I wouldn't pay for it in your situation.
