Buttons from the AC/Ventilation panel
Hi,
I have a question to the Panel from my 64 Olds 98. I have it witch AC.
Not all buttons stay behind when i am pushing the buttons.
Only "Off" and "vent" are staying behind. Is it right?
And when not, what can it be? Vacuum?
It is this panel:

All of them should latch in place when pushed all the way in, and unlatch when you select a different button.
It's hard to describe how the thing works, but when you push a button, it operates a bar with a hook on the end. The hook latches onto another bar that rotates the vacuum selector valve on the control head and directs vacuum to the appropriate vacuum motors.
My guess is the thing is dirty and the mechanisms are sticking. If you can get the control head out, spray a little WD40 or other light penetrating oil on it and that should free up the mechanism.

Not with all them springs and flat retaining nuts! The parts would be everywhere...
I've gotten many of the pushbutton HVAC controls working again using aerosol computer duster and then a light shot of WD40. In desperation I have dissassembled the potmetal rotary vacuum valves and trued them with 600 grit sandpaper on a piece of plate glass. That got the vacuum side working again.

Same problem
I recently discovered that I am having the exact same problem with my 1967 98. The only button that isn't staying in is the ac. This after I just had my engine rebuilt and new ac lines put in. If I hold the button in, I have awesome ac. I don't know what to do. I really am not looking forward to taking the entire dash apart to get the control panel out. Maybe I'll try the forced air and wd 40 trick. I just have to laugh at this point to keep from crying as it has been a long year of restoration and chasing one problem after the other.
