Engine VIN derivative
#2
Welcome. Since this appears to be your first post, I'll suggest that you'll stand a better chance of getting a useful response if you don't post on the end of a five year old thread that really isn't related to your question (the original thread was about a 1957 Olds, which has a completely different numbering system than the one you're asking about). I've moved your post to your very own thread.
Here's what the VIN derivative you've asked about tells us:
8 - this must be a "3", not an "8", since GM didn't use the number 8 for any of it's divisions (at least not in the US). 3 signifies Oldsmobile division, and I assume this is an Olds motor we're talking about.
2 - Model year 1972
R - Arlington, TX assembly plant
142297 - last six digits of the VIN from the car in which this motor was originally installed.
