'60 Olds photo shoot...
Hey guys,
Every year I try and take my 98 out and shoot some pics, and I thought you guys might like to check them out. I'm a photo geek, so I always have fun with this. Weather could have been better...I almost canceled because there was a pretty good thunderstorm going all afternoon, but it cleared up enough in the evening that I decided to go ahead and take the car out and take my chances. If anyone wants technical details just let me know, and I'd be happy to share. These are a couple of my favorites, but there's a bigger set on 1960oldsmobile.com..

Cheers,
Scott

). These were taken in the Bitterroot Valley in western Montana. And yes, it really is great having this kind of scenery so close by. I love hiking, and it's only about a 15 minute drive to some pretty good trails that go up the drainages of those mountains. That particular spot is actually right on the edge of town...believe it or not, there's a KFC about 30 yards to the right, and a grocery store about 100 yards to the left
. Just don't tell anyone...don't want to ruin the magic
.
Excellent job! I am a photo nut myself, but there very limited places to photograph a car around here in the concete jungle. Montana is on my 'must see' list.
How did you light the car up in this particular shot? Looks like a streetlight to the left??

No lights around the area...I brought my own
. The car was lit by a single Norman 200b pack/head (at 200 watt/seconds) first in an 86" parabolic umbrella, then when the wind got too strong I just used the regular reflector. Used a grid on a couple of them to control spill. All were either shot with a 70-200/2.8IS or Sigma 15-30mm ultra wide on my Canon 1Ds. Used medium apertures for the shots with flash (f5.6-f8) and f2.8 for the ambient light shots. As much as anything, this was an experiment to see how the umbrella would light a car...I've only used it light group portraits at weddings up until now.
.
. It's a PLM (Parabolic Light Modifier) by Paul Buff. At 86" it's almost comically big...I really wish I would have taken a setup shot with it, it's really enormous. For more info on them check this thread out on Fred Miranda:http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/805037/0
It's 19 pages long...lots of reading, but also lots of info on them.
And here's my mini-review...

It's such a huge and efficient light source I think it might even work to light a car in full daylight if you have enough power and feather it just right. I've got a Whilte Lightning X3200 I'd love to try with this.
Still haven't used the diffuser yet...come to think of it, I'm not sure where I put it
. There's a version 2 coming out pretty soon too.

Glad the wind did not pick up - there would have been no stopping it.
BTW, that thing would hide one heck of a gun!
