1974 Oldsmobile 98 Hood ornament and taillight

Hello everyone I'm recently new to the olds forum. I bought a true barn find original owner fully optioned Oldsmobile 98 with 26,xxx original miles. This car's interior is like it came off the showroom floor its black Vinyl print. Anyways I am missing the hood ornament which I would like to purchase if anyone has one. As I cannot find one on eBay. Also the passenger side taillight housing and reverse light and bumper filler on that side are melted from some unknown source I Googled this and I've seen other same year Olds have the same thing...anyone have spare taillight housings and reverse light housings? And know what cause this problem?

Hot exhaust gas caused the taillight and bumper filler deformation. You may need to extend the tailpipe end a few inches farther to the back, but then it will probably discolor the bumper. Emission controls were not very refined back then and a lot of cars ran lean which created hot exhaust.

I'm trying to remember if the 74 Ninety Eight even had a stand-up hood ornament. I know 75-76 did and 73 did not.

Yeah, if there's a hood ornament for the '74, I want one for my '73.

Well the tailights and bumper filler where already melted when I bought the car. And since I bought it I have put all new exhaust system on anyways I did duals that dump behind rear tires won't melt anything. And yes 1974 had hood ornaments as mine is missing. Looks like it was broken off. And the base is still there.

Nice car. That's riding in style.

John (2blu442) lives in Oregon and may well have all sorts of parts for you.

Thanks for the help. I'll check on 2blu442. And see what he might have. Maybe I can go to the classic car wreck yards sound here and get lucky as well

Here's a couple of pages out of the '74 brochure showing a hood ornament on a 98.

From the same brochure, note the lower left. Available on 98 and Toronado.

Jaunty you're the man. I knew what I was talking about. I believe mine is the shorter ornament on the right as the base looks like that and the left one has a "T" on it lol. Jaunty would you happen to know where I might find one? As well as taillights housings and reverse light housings?

This would be consistent with what the brochure says if the images, from left to right, are in the order that the two models, Toronado and 98, are listed in the text.

I have no idea where to get a hood ornament or the other items you need. They will all be junkyard finds.

Hood ornaments are the kinds of things you see boxes of on display by vendors at swap meets. If you can get yourself to the OCA Nationals, which is in Springfield, Illinois at the end of this month, you could probably find one.

Hey Brett,

Do you need a taillight lens for your 98? I just found this one on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1974-OLD...cdb0d1&vxp=mtr

I'm pretty sure the LH and RH are the same lens. I think the price is high for a single lens but unfortunately, NOS is harder and harder to find and '74 is a one year only for a number of parts on these cars.

You mentioned in one of your posts that you have some "classic car" yards nearby....please share what they have with us as best you can. We're always very interested in what's sitting in yards.

Keep in mind, that 98's like ours share a lot with full sized Buicks, Caddy's, even Pontiacs so if you find any of those, post what you can....pictures are always best!

Hey John thanks I think I'll buy that tail light yes it is spent but I have no choice I guess if I need it... Yes her in Oregon and SouthWest-Washington we have a few classic car wrecking yards. One is called All American. Which has a website but they don't keep it updated with inventory. They crushed a 1973 Custom Cruiser which I was pissed about cause it looked like new and was an "unwanted" car sold to them and I was going to get it out and got there too late. But yes I know the "C" Body cars from Buick, Olds, and Cadillac interchange since they're same platform. I actually look for the Buicks and Cadillacs to get parts off since they interchange I will try to get pix of what's in the yard next time I go up there which might be tomorrow. They have everything from pre-war cars all the way up until the mid 1980's.

Hey Brett, that yard sounds great. I wish we had yards like that on the east coast! Definitely post lots of pics on here of any c bodies. You can also post pics of any other Olds in the junk yard post for others to see. Keep a lookout for a driver side lighted sun visor for me please...most likely in a Fleetwood.

Looking forward to seeing what you find...happy hunting!

Oh I will keep a look out for your lighted visor. They have tons of Oldsmobile's and caddy's and Buick's from post war to the mid 70's. I saw a 1960 88 convertible sitting in there all complete minus the top. And some beautiful 58's. That was a few months ago. I'll take pictures. Maybe Even a video to put on YouTube of me just walking around the yard. They have ever make there.

Hey JC how much do you want for both of those Hood ornaments? I'll take them. And buff them! I'd love to have the ornament back on my hood make the car look even more presidential. Let me know. Or PM me and give me the info. Thanks!

Hey Brett,

In your searching, please let me know if you see any full sized GM's with the factory power moonroof (98, Toronado, Eldorado, Electra, etc). If so, I would really like an extra set or two of the drive cables. These are getting harder and harder to find. They can be fairly delicate so careful removal is pretty critical. Let me know if you see any cars with a moonroof.
