1968 Olds 98 carb dash pot

On my 1968 Olds 98 (455 cu. in. 4 barrel carb) can any one tell me what is this part called and what is the purpose? It seems to be broken and not attached to anything on the carb.

Not my era of expertise but If like many other cars it function is to slow the deceleration action of the throttle. Its a emission thing.....Tedd

Yours is missing the part that would touch the carburetor linkage. This is what it should look like.

The dashpot was to prevent stalling on deceleration when the throttle plates closed quickly, it cushioned the closing. My recall is that it was used on AC equipped cars.

Someone please jump in if they know something different about them.
'68 Ninety Eight...THAT is a nice car.
