1959 Olds 98 speedo cable

My cylinder all of a sudden last year was free wheeling at under 5 MPH. Bouncing back and forth, an old timer told me to change the cable. It would run right once moving.
I had my doubts, but it worked.

The cable outer covering was all dried up and flaking off when you flexed it. Real poor shape for a clean undercarriage car. It was disintegrating.

Now it is back to normal but is inaccurate at higher speeds. Any idea on the fix for that or do I need a new cylinder. This car has the rolling drum and no needle,

I'm assuming that you lubed the cable when you replaced it. If it read correctly before you replaced it should read the same now . You didn't change any gearing only freed up any friction the worn cable was causing. My thoughts ...Tedd

Yes replaced the cable, but before and after it reads too high at higher speeds. The car has the correct size bias tires on it.

Did someone change the gear in the trans before? It is close to accurate up to 35-40 MPH but gets more inaccurate at higher speeds.

Next time I moved car the cylinder was bouncing again from a dead start then engaged after getting up to 5-10 MPH and will not bounce again until speed goes to almost stop again.

What would cause it, it worked for 1 day after changing the cable.

George, I think those 59-62 color-changers have a 90° ell where the cable goes into the speedometer head. That may be where the bind is.

The speedometer magnets may have gotten weak after 62 years too. The unit will have to come out of the car to correct that.

Not really binding, just the opposite.Free wheeling until 5-10 MPH, although the magnets are probably the cause of it being inaccurate at high speeds.

Unless the magnet holds it in place until you get moving at 10MPH or more.

Any pointers for getting the speedometer out of the dash?

I need to get it repaired since I am out of any other ideas.
