Where does that exhaust at the front of the manifold come from? Is it a wrap around from the drivers side?? I'm confused

 

Cross over pipe, (single exhaust). You are correct again.

It may have been two block off plates, one for each manifold at the front as the dual exhaust is attached to the rear of the manifolds respectively.

There is a few anomalies with this system as there are a few (flat spots) in the pipe work i.e squashed slightly, so it clears some mechanicals. The installer should be made aware of this, but then again, lets see how good he really is.

 

Not sure how yours starts or drives, after sitting for that many years I would check your freeze plugs. I don't mean just looking from the ground at the side of the car, you think you see it all but you don't see inside the lip of the plug.

I did not know mine were that bad until I was actually under there for something else as I had her jacked right up. They replaced some when I purchased the car with steel ones. They were nearly rusted through and leaked a bit.

The one behind the starter motor had stalactites hanging off it an inch it had been slowly leaking for that long. That's the hardest one to see because it is hidden by the starter motor. All the leaking ones were easy to get to, the starter motor comes off out of the way easy enough.

When replacing, best to use brass freeze plugs, they last much much longer.

We actually call them welch plugs here.

That Parisienne is a sharp looking car. How long have you had it, and did you do the restoration? Honestly I'm literally amazed that a car that old survived in QC with all the road salt that gets put down there in the winter.

 

I have had the Parisienne only for near a year now. Indeed, that car has survived quite well, as it is mostly unrestored too, and it's a true Quebec car (unlike the Olds, which is originally a southern US vehicle that has been kept inside in Quebec ever since it was imported here).

 

 

I am afraid you are confusing my survivor car with the restored car owned by another member who posted a lot of pics on my thread. My own car, the subject of this thread, looks like this under the hood, as of now:

Very nice cars. Back to the exhaust. You only need one blockoff plate and that is for the front of the passenger side manifold where the crossover pipe connects. The manifold on the drivers side only has one outlet which is the crossover pipe going to the passenger side. If you don't have a blockoff plate they can cut the crossover pipe off and weld a plug in it. I guess no company is perfect but I had great results from Waldren Exhaust on my 54. They quoted a 3 week delivery and stuck to it. Their pipes fit perfectly. I would not hesitate to use them again.

My question about the exhaust is: IF the exhaust flows forward and across to the RS of the car (and that's what it looks like to me), how would putting a block off plate on the LS manifold help? Am I missing something?

 

You don't put a blockoff plate on the left side manifold. You put the second exhaust pipe on the left side and the blockoff plate on the front of the right side manifold. If you look at the picture of the manifold you will see the exhaust pipe on the left side of the manifold and the crossover pipe coming in the front of the manifold on the right side of the picture. The blockoff plate goes on the front of the right side manifold.

 

Glenn, I understand the concept no problem. It's the same thing as the N10 blockoff plate on the 70-72 A body. What I really need to see is how the LS exhaust manifold is configured. Everything in the posted pictures is from the RS and I get the impression the exhaust on the LS ports to the front and runs up to the RS exhaust manifold. That's whats confusing me.

 

Allan, I see what you are getting at now. The right side manifold is make just like the one on my 54. The crossover comes straight down on the left side and goes under the pan. I can see how this picture give the impression it curves from around the front. The power steering on my 54 makes the left side very difficult. When I first took my 54 to my muffler guy, he walked around under the car a few minute and then said "Glenn, I have been putting duals on cars for about 25 years and I have never seen one I couldn't put duals on but I believe you have one". If you had to bend the left side exhaust manifold from scratch, it would be very difficult.

Indeed, it runs very good. Not even a miss, even though it's not been times and adjusted yet! I hope it stays as smooth when the project is done.

 

I'm just going out on a limb here, but that was after an oil/filter change and new plugs/wires? It looks like it's running so smooth - no vibrations or shaking. Well done!

Yes, the only trim part that did not come with the car and is still missing on it now was the driver side rear wheel arch moulding. I have found a set of them on eBay and they are going to be here in a few days.

Does the passenger's side dash cove light up? It did on the 1960 Olds I used to own, just wondering how the 59 dash looks in the dark. Always loved Oldsmobiles of that period, they had interesting interiors.
