Hello From Texas... 1984 Hurst Olds owner

Just wanted to introduce myself. I have a 1984 Hurst Olds that my father bought when I was in second grade. Before that he owned a 1979 H/O and many many many classic Oldsmobiles. I currently have the '84, I ended up with that car in 9th grade when he came across an '83. The '83 needs more work than the '84, but it is pretty much original. Our plans are to keep the '83 and the '84 pretty much stock with the exception of the stereo. We aren't looking to shake the tops off, but we tend to put subs in our cars to balance the music out and we both love to blast classic rock. In the spring I am going to pull my tired 307 and stick it in the garage. However, I did get a 307 from a 1983 Hurst Olds off of craigslist. I am going to pull that apart and do a few things to it and drop it in. I am not looking to race, but want a good sounding car I can cruise in. I also plan on getting a nice paint job for the car around that time. I painted it myself in highschool to protect the metal that was peeking through, but want to get a professional paintjob next. We drive these cars on a regular basis and enjoy them like they should be enjoyed.

A few non-Hurst Olds projects that we have are...
- 1970 Cutlass 'S' fastback
- 1970 Cutlass fastback post-coupe
- 1971 Cutlass Supreme
- 1979 Y84 Bandit Trans Am (With an Olds 403)
- 1979 Formula Firebird
- 1972 VW Beetle that I made a Herbie out of
- 1963 Ford F100 Custom Cab

No... we are not a dealer and do not flip cars. We have just picked up some good deals through the years and have made father-son projects out of them. Eventually a few will leave, but the Oldsmobiles and Herbie will stay!

Here are a few pics! Some aren't the best and I will try to get better pics of the white Cutlass, but here are a few projects we have. Also, I live in Austin. Not too far I suppose! Only a few hours! We come up to the Goodguys car show every year!

A little about each project…
- The gold Cutlass is one that we picked up about four weeks ago! The gentleman that had it was the second owner, and was moving. He had started pulling the front end apart and doing a few things here and there with his kids. The kids lost interest and he is moving to Hawaii. He sold it to us for $800. He couldn't have been happier with the home it was going to!

- The white Cutlass is one that we have had for probably 12 or so years. It has been a slow moving project. It was put on the back burner for a while, then we started working on it again. We went through the fuel system, the brake system, we did the interior, and a little motor work. It needs paint and tires currently, but it became road worthy 2 years ago!

- The red Cutlass we got probably 2 years ago. My father really wanted another post-coupe. He sold his a while back and had been searching ever since. I came across this one for him on craigslist. It runs and drives, needs brake work and lots of cosmetic work obviously, but it was $1800.

- Herbie is a 1972 VW Beetle. My little brother and I bought it a little over a year ago. It was originally yellow… I'll be honest… I should have found a white one! I forgot that the whole inside is yellow too! When I was a kid I would watch Herbie Rides Again so many times! I caught it on TV a year ago and decided that I was going to get one car that I have always wanted. (Other than my Hurst!) I bought this from a VW nut in East Austin and drove it home. The paintjob is currently a rattle can paintjob, but I actually like how it looks, plus it gives it character. This year I plan on gutting it and sending it to the paint shop to have a decent paint job put on it. It is more of a weekend fun car/ daily driver when needed! It frustrates me A LOT. The previous owner lied about quite a few things, which didn't make me happy. However, every time I think about getting rid of it and finding another I think to myself that it isn't Herbie's fault that he wasn't taken care of! I truly love that car and can never get rid of it! I have been told many times that it isn't the proper year etc, but I don't care. That is the car that I really wanted and chose to be Herbie.
- The 1963 F100 I bought about two weeks ago from my neighbor. I found it for him two years ago and he hasn't done much with it. When the homeowners association told him to move it, he put it in the garage and there it sits. I have been bugging him about it for about a year now and he finally agreed to sell it to me because he needs money to fun his daughter's wedding! It is still currently in his garage, so I don't have very good pics of that one. I am very excited to start working on that and get it on the road.
- The Trans Am is a 1979 with an Olds 403. We found it on craigslist about 5 years ago. The guy that we bought it from just wanted it gone and told us $900 today takes it. That was a no brainer for a running t-top trans am! We drove it onto the trailer. It was disguised as a Firebird Esprit, so I have been working on getting the proper fender, hood, and nose on there. After some investigating, we found out that it is a documented Y84 Bandit Edition Trans Am.

Okay… The 1983 and 1984 Hurst Olds story! This is a long one… I'm sorry! My father had always wanted a 1983 Hurst Olds, but about 13 years ago he fell in love with a 1984 that was on Ebay. The price was right and it was beautiful. A perfect driver which is what he wanted. He had it shipped from Oregon and he was so nervous about the car having only seen it in pictures. He called the truck driver almost every day and asked about the car. The truck driver said it was actually a very clean car and he shouldn't worry. The man that sold it to him in Oregon said the paint job wasn't the greatest. When the car arrived, my dad called the person he got it from and said "you really misrepresented this car." The guy was worried and started apologizing. My dad said "No, this car is AMAZING. It is a lot more than what I was expecting. The paint is perfect for me, the interior is perfect for me, this is the perfect car. I wouldn't want any other car! I really appreciate you working with me and honestly, this will be the last home that this car has. It will be kept in the family forever." The seller was very happy that my father loved it. My dad babied the car and the first thing he did was take it to the local Father's Day car show!

- About 5 years ago my dad was searching on craigslist and came across an add that said "1983 Cutlass Calais For Sale - $2000" My dad decided to click on the ad to see what shape it was in. The ad was in Spanish, but he understood 5.0 motor. The only picture of the car was the front fender. My dad saw that it was black and silver with the stripe kit that only a particular car came with. My dad quickly called the number in the ad and after a few tries he got a translator to help. The translator spoke broken English, but it was enough. My dad asked if the car had t-tops. The seller said "no… it is a hard top. The front is glass." My dad said okay! It has t-tops. Does it have a fin on the back? The seller said "No, it has a tray type thing though." My dad said great! The seller said "It has three shifters, only one works. The other two won't move. I was going to take it apart and see what's jamming it." My dad said "DO NOT TOUCH THE SHIFTERS. I will be by first thing in the morning to buy the car. I will show you how they work." The next day my dad picked up the car and drove it to work. Later that day I went with him to pick it up. When I saw the car my eyes lit up! The paint wasn't great, but the front air dam was intact, the dual air snorkel was there, everything was the way it should be. We had originally gotten the car for me, but on the way home my dad said "you aren't getting this car." I was devastated. He said "the steering is loose, it has a shift kit that will throw you in the back seat. No way." He paused a minute and said "However… because I love you and know how much you want a Hurst Olds… I will sell you my '84 for what we got the '83 for." I couldn't be more excited! Fast forward to today. The '83 is currently in our driveway being prepped for paint, and I am working on the interior. The '84 I re-painted in high school to protect the metal, and it is due for another paintjob very soon. I plan on having that done in the spring.

Welcome to the CO group! What a collection y'all have! By the way, there will be an Olds Zone Show in Granbury, TX, next Spring. You need to bring one/some of yours to it! Look forward to meeting both you and your Dad.

Thank you! That sounds like a lot of fun! Is there somewhere that I can get more info on it?
