Hello and a question
Hello and a question
My name is Brian and I just recently purchased a 65 F85 Deluxe with the High Compression 330 and 2 speed Jetaway transmission. Just wanted to say hello to everyone here and compliment you all on an awesome site. I have been lurking here for weeks in anticipation of getting my new toy. I will post pictures of my new baby soon. I picked the car up last Thursday evening and promptly went out of town Friday for the long weekend.
Now to the question.....The car starts, idles and cruises around town just great, no stumble or hesitation and it appears the variable pitch convertor is working as it should be. The problem is at steady hiway speeds above 50 mph the car will surge. I can get it to stop by backing off below 50 or by accelerating. it seems worse between 60-70 mph. Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting? It has the 4 BBL rochester carb on it.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am wondering if your switch pitch is coming in and out inappropriately due to schmutz in the activating switch- I have seen a bulletin noting that these switches go bad.
You could try unplugging the switch pitch wire at the kickdown/ SP switch and see if the surging goes away. It won't hurt it to drive w/o switching pitch for a few minutes.

For the quick responses. I tried unhooking the switch pitch with no luck. I will try unhooking the vacuum from the distro next. Probably should do a tune up on her as a matter of principle, probably tackle that this weekend. As Promised here are a few pics.

Thank you!!! I was actually at this place shopping for a Corvair when this baby caught my eye!! (Actually the wife's) We had a 1968 Cutlass Convert and a 69 hardtop many many moons ago and this one just spoke to both of us. A 4 door was not even something I was considering but the lines on this one are stunning to me. Also makes it easy to load up the grand kids for an ice cream run as well!
The Color Code on the tag is H-H which from what I could find is Laurel Mist.

Ok definitely made some progress here. Gave the car a basic tune up this weekend, plugs points, cap, rotor, reset timing to 7.5 tdc per tuneup sheet and as suggested drove the car with the vacuum advance plugged, No joy there as the car still surged at partial throttle settings. Checked vacuum at the front manifold port and was pulling 22 inches. At the distributor port it was pulling a steady 17 inches. On a whim I decided to try and plug the port on the back of the carb. This hose runs to some sort of valve/breather that also connects to the air cleaner. I have looked everywhere for a name of this part but no luck. On the upside unplugging it solved the surge problem!!! She runs smooth and steady at any speed now.
So do I need to replace that valve or can I run it as is?
Thanks for the help so far...you guys are most helpful.
