Newbie with 64 Convertilble

Newbie with 64 Convertilble

Hi, new guy here from SW Va.
I'm new here but not new to restorations or forums. My brother and I have a part-time business restoring muscle cars. This is our first Olds. So, I'll have some stupid questions along the way.
Here's our project. 64 Cutlass (possible 442) factory 4-speed:

Welcome to the site! There's several members here including myself with 1964's so as the questions arise post away! Looking forward to seeing more pictures of your car.

Oldsmobile did install 4 speeds in the Cutlass without it being a 442, I've got a hardtop project car with that option. There are some members here who can help you verify just what you have when you get to that point.

That ratchet strap makes me cringe on the front the wheel well trim is impossible to find !!!!
Looks solid also that belt line trim (h) trim I think is also really hard to find so hopefully you have that as well !

Man I really love the verts I need to find a cheap one lol

Any ways love to see some of the cars you have built and welcome any knowledge you can offer

Yes, I agree with Justin that I hope the strap didn't damage the wheelwell trim. I've been looking for a nice set for a while and am still looking!

i agree ,nice solid car. those ratchet straps could have cost you a lifetime of hunting parts.

Yea, I guess that ratchet strap comes from mainly dealing with cars that have plenty of repop parts available. Had no idea. But, it wasn't damaged. That's something we do on every car that we haul over 200 miles just in case the hood latch doesn't hold. On most cars it's cheaper to buy wheelwell trim than a new hood, windshield, windshield chrome, hinges, etc.

That's good it wasn't damaged !

There are a few here that can tell you what to look for in a 64 for a 442 I am okay on 65 but not to up to par in 64
Another good sight is w29board kinda slow but great bunch

Outstanding! I will look forward to your posts. For what it is worth, ALL trim is impossible to find in good condition. I would almost say (just my opinion) the rocker trim is priceless.

Well, I'm not an expert but here's a couple things to look for. The 1964 442 was option B09 which would be printed on a build sheet. I found one under the passenger side bucket seat in a 1964 two door post car, and the remains of one in the seat back of the back seat in a 1964 convertible. I don't know if it was printed in the firewall trim tag or not.

Since it was an option package much of what made a 1964 442 can be cloned. There should be a 330 engine, 4 speed transmission, rear sway bar with boxed control arms for the rear. The air cleaner had two snorkels, there were 442 badges added to the front fenders and the trunk or deck lid. There were no dual exhaust manifolds so the crossover would be blocked off and dual pipes installed. But this last detail could have been done at anytime in the cars history.

From the photos I don't see the fender or deck lid badges, does it have the other things mentioned?

Even if its not a 442 having a factory 4 speed convertible should still be in demand. Does the car have bucket seats and console? Does it look like the original drivetrain? Looking forward to more pictures when you have time.

BlueRidgeMuscleCars.com has a few more, but we only recently started taking/posting pics. And, we don't post "before" pics there because we sell our cars, and that may be TMI for a prospective buyer

A better routing of a hood safety strap might be to anchor it to the trailer. or, vehicle frame anchor points. It doesn't need to be super tight, as it's just a safety measure.

Do you have any air cleaner at all?
Any '64 trims and any sort of '64 442 dual snout air cleaner will be exceedingly rare and valuable- if you have a "damaged" trim piece, your best bet may well be to un-damage it and fix it as best you can.

A lot of '64 parts are kind of oddball- Water pump inlet is on the driver side, therefore timing marks are on the RH side, therefore the timing tab is 1964 only, as is the damper that has the timing mark. 442's would have the 4-bbl HC 330, which all came with the large OD balancer which has a rubberized outer ring. 2-bbl 330's used a simple balancer w/o that rubberized outer ring therefore much smaller diameter, therefore a different timing tab.

I would defer to others as far as exactly how to peg a true '64 442... it's like voodoo. Lots of tiny obscure clues like exact location of emblem holes, what emblem is on the dash, etc Finding a sheet with B09 on it would be the best. Start with the obvious
VIN
Body Tag
Engine Unit Number stamped into the front of the RH head
Carb number on its triangular tag
Trans application ID which is? On the round cover on the side I think...
Protecto-Plate would be very advantageous. Will have the Engine Unit # on it.
Rear end gear ratio
Any remnants of PN tags on the frame, coil springs, stabilizer bar, etc.

DO NOT lose the California original plates.
Or any other part of the car, really.

Thanks, I'll look closer when I'm in the shop tomorrow. I'm about 99% sure it has a single snout air cleaner. It is a 330 4bbl 4-speed car, so who knows.
We did a resto on a 74 Nova SS a few years ago. Preparing for questions about authenticating that it was a true SS I did research and found out there was no true way without a build sheet.
As far as the ratchet strap on the wheelwell trim; you can't tie down to the trailer because of movement of the car's suspension going down the road. Luckily it didn't damage the trim because it was just a loose fit. We always replace the trim and had no idea it wasn't available.
The CA plates will come off because this car is for resale, but I'm curious why you mentioned it. I know nobody wants a newer CA car because of the extreme emission controls, but a 64?

I don't think the blue yellow plates are orig? I think they were black yellow ,but i would keep them with the car regardless for if the buyer would like them. I have the set that came with my 65 issued in 82 and tried to keep them on the car, but the dmv said "I could only transfer the plates if they were mine or the same year as to the car "
