Looking at 67 Toronado
Looking at 67 Toronado
Hi guys.
New to the Olds hobby. Have a few Cadillacs. A 76 Seville, which has an Oldsmobile engine in it, 78 Eldorado and 87 Deville.
Now looking at a 67 Toronado. Car is in running condition. Still has original paint, which can be cleaned up a bit. SLIGHT rust on the back of the vinyl roof. Just a bit. No rust under the car, nothing in trunk. Rear trunk lid has some rust, but just surface. Just the paint is a little bad there.
Engine was apparently redone, as well as the brakes and a few other things. Took it out for a drive today. Runs good, but could probably do with new plugs, wires, hoses and belts etc?
What is the avarage price of these cars in decent driver condition?
What is the parts availability? Lights work, but takes a while to pop up. AC works, even the antenna still works.
Cant believe how much smaller the Toronado is to the 78 Eldorado. The cars really grew in size...
Thanks for the help

Got the car:-)
Very excited. Have it in the shop now, to have the transmission fluid changed, and general look over.
I dont know if I did something wrong. When the flatbed pulled the car on the bed, I dont think I had the car in neutral. I think I had it in drive. Neutral is off to the left of neutral, and drive is just to the right of neutral. So does not quite line up. Same when the car came off the flatbed. Ran fine afterward though. Car did not drag, so not sure if it was even in drive. Maybe torque converter just turned a bit? Or could I now have messed up something?

Congrats! I always wanted a 67 Toro.... maybe someday... The pointer is adjustable, that may be what the trouble is with shift indicator alignment. Now you need to post pictures and give driving impressions.
Thanks guys. Car is just dirty. Just took it to shop today to do transmission fluid, and have whole thing checked out.
Will do rest of fluids, belts, hoses and stuff myself in good time.

Engine was rebuilt, yes. Guy said around 5 yrs ago, but he probably put less than 1000 on the car since then. He said he used stock components, so my guess is compression is still 10.5. I love the sound of that engine. Just beautiful.
Real reason he sold the car is that he has Alzheimers, and he just had a stroke a while ago. He has many, many cars, but he cannot work on them anymore. Some of them he has restored to pristine condition.
He has a big garage, even has a lift, so I am sure things were done to the car properly. The title in 1989 said the car had 126,000 miles on it. Odometer now says 33,000, so my guess is 133,000. He said the transmission is still original.
There are a few things I need to look at. Indicator stalk works fine, but indicators don’t work. Lights come up slowly, so probably vaccum leak somewhere. Also emergency brake does not work, and radio is dead, though he said he had it sent in and fixed. Maybe a wire not connected properly.
Other than some faded paint and little rust on the trunk, I think the car is solid. No rust on the frame, inside the car, or inside the trunk.
Engine runs fine, but probably can do with a few tanks of clean gasoline and just being driven. Car was a bit hesitant at first when I looked at it, but ran a lot better after a full tank of premium. Will put some techron in there next time to see if that clears things up a bit too.
Tires have less than 500 miles on them, even though they might be 10 yrs old. He said the spare is still original, so might want to throw that out too.
He had the workshop manual, so don’t need to buy that.

Welcome to the forum and the world of Oldsmobiles. You picked a great car with the 67 Toro and it looks like you have a good solid example. Things to check:
- Brakes - this is a very heavy car capable of high speeds and the drum brakes were marginal at best. Make sure everything is in top shape, if not do a full brake job including all the hydraulics - cheap insurance.
- Front axles - broken and leaking CV joint seals are common along with worn joints.
- Fuse panel - check all the fuses, I would probably replace them and make sure they are the correct size for each circuit. Also check the panel itself for signs of overheating damage.
Waterzap, I'm glad you got registered. I think you'll find a whole bunch of really knowledgable folks here that are generous with what they offer.
Your Toro looks like a great start. If she really does have original paint than a little effort on it might really surprise you. I've used these products before on an original paint Travelall and was impressed by the results.

As for the turn signals, try jiggling the ignition key while the car is running. Gently push, pull and twist the key in both directions to see if it gets the signals working again. I've found on my Toro that when the car was running the ignition switch was shorting the gauges, turn signal, windows and other electric features. I found a 'sweet' spot in the switch that would get everything working again than later replaced the switch.
As to the slow headlights, it seems to be normal and I've even read in some period auto reviews of this same complaint. New hoses and vacuum actuators could help but a better option might be WD-40, grease than exercise those headlight doors often.
Good luck,
Chris

Thanks guys. Cant wait till I can start working on it. Maybe do the oil tonight and coolant tonight.
Now to pay for this addiction, need to sell another Caddy.
I have a 78 Eldorado too, and this car is a much better size. I don’t know why they made them that big.

1967 Olds Toronado parts...............
I have a lot of parts for this car -- including the BEST Points on the planet -- Standard ++ Blue Streak ++ which were discontinued two years ago -- copper contacts throughout, screw for adjustment, and their own feature - a bracket with a pad to keep the cam "wet" while rotating.....
Are you the guy who called me for asbestos shoes?????
The 803 area code # you gave me -- I got some girl who said that there was no one there with a 1967 Olds Toronado....................
