What's the difference between Low and High compression 330?
So I was trying to figure out H.P. on my 1967 Cutlass Convertible.330 engine.
The code on the Block says 330001 LH
A website said that "L" means Low compression and "H" means 4 barrel.
I thought that all 67 Supreme's were High or Ultra high compression.I believe that would be a "G". Doe's anyone have a clue what the main difference is and is there a H.P. difference.I'm still trying to figure out what the horses are on this model.Would the vin no. give a clue? It's all original and has gold valve covers with Jetfire on them. It's a 2 speed Tranny. Also I think that's a 1 on the 6th digit.I'm sure "330" represents the engine size.I'm not sure about the "001"
Thanks from Chattanooga Tn.

According to the 1967 Chassis Service Manual, there is no such suffix as "LH."
Just "E," "G," or "H."
No. US cars: 9, 10.25, or 10.5:1, export cars (banana republics): 8.5:1.
No.
You'd be wrong.
The first engine that year was 300001, they counted up from there.
It's the last three numbers of 330001, or the 3,000th 330 engine built in 1967.

Wondering if he could have a car that was built in 66 for 67 that still had the L stamping for the L73 9.0 low compression engine? But then the numbering would be out of wack since it started with 001005.
Mudeye: go back and look at the engine stamping really carefully. Use the link I gave you to WAC to double check your numbers. That info is correct - it was published by Oldsmobile. The info you got elsewhere on the web could be anyones guess.

You guys are correct.I think I'm looking at the Exhaust Manifold. So I was not looking at the right numbers.Having said that. The code on the right side engine block i can't find.Maybe it's covered with sludge or something. Is it the right side as I'm facing the car? Or right as in sitting in the seat left and right? Also I found this stamped on the block back by the distributor CHG-BJ But have yet to find the 1 up front.
Thanks
Thanks

And here is a photo showing it on an assembled engine - it's on the wire brushed pad just inboard of the alternator:

Great pic Eric, shows much better than the CSM. Much easier to find and read than on 71/72. Wonder why they changed the stamping pad location when it was so easy to see

The later number was stamped on the block.
If the engine's been apart, all the earlier number will tell you is what engine that one head was originally on.
- H = Optional Banana Republic 4bbl 8.3:1
- E = Optional Low Compression 2bbl 9:1
- G = Optional Standard Compression 4bbl 10.25:1
- Nothing = Standard 2bbl 10.25:1

Allan, I believe what you are thinking of is the VIN derivative. And that was intentionally more hidden, as the mandate to have that on the engine (and trans) was theft control related.

O.K. Eric There was a wire covering the "G" W332755G And it has a 4 bbl
Valve covers are gold .Original engine. So is this H.C. or standard compression? (back to my thread question) And does this also indentify how much H.P.?
Thanks

1967 W3•••••G engine number = optional 4bbl carb, 10.25:1 CR, 320 SAE gross HP.
Remember that SAE gross HP and SAE net HP are two different things - this motor probably made more like 250 to 275 net HP when new (others may have more accurate numbers)

Well I guess what I should have said was after reading the link provided by AllanR, I didn't find and W numbered engine starting with a 3. Granted it's a 1967 service manual, just thinking it might have carried over from 1966. I'll have to do more research.
OK, found it on TOCMP.
