64 98 Luxury

Hey all, I'm new to Oldsmobiles, but have always loved unique cars. I was shopping for a coupe de ville, or 63 continental when i ran into this beauty. She is my 64 olds 98 luxury sedan. It's full loaded (minus cruise control) and pretty much all original. The only upgrades are the alternator, a couple gauges, upgraded ignition coil and rear air shocks.

Upholstery is dry and the seams are ripping. Paint is original and faded but looks good. The body is super straight, the only dent is in the front bumper. Everything works well except the ac, it's all there, but leaks freon. Couple small oil leaks to fix including the rear main, but this car is pretty sweet.

I've had a few interesting cars in the past, including a 500hp methanol injected turbo RX7, RT4WD civic wagon, Nissan SE-R, 79 Mustang Cobra among others. It's been a while since I've owned a classic, and am glad to stumbled upon this one.

Looks like someone slammed the suspension a bit, too...

thanks, it was dropped about 3 inches. Did you notice the chrome bullets on the wheels and steering wheel?
Nothing that can't be undone.

I meant to ask, does anyone have a link to the shop manual? I need to get the door panel off to reset the passenger window.

The PO gave me a disk called Detroit Iron: Factory Shop Manual that covers all 64 olds, but I can't open it on a mac

This oughta do ya.

I'm sure there is a way to open it on a Mac - FileJuicer comes to mind as a brute force possibility - but you shouldn't need to now .

Thumbs up

NICE RIDE and WELCOME!! Classy looking car; NO doubt; far less seen than the Caddies and Lincolns of that era! Way to go!

Very nice ride, and welcome to CO! Yep, noticed the bullets, the drop, and also the "sleepies" on the headlights!!! Don't see that too much anymore, and very period correct! Once again, welcome!

error 404 not found D: also, if you join do they actually let you access the information? Like they tell you to register but don't really say if you get to view anything extra once you have registered.. kind of a lame setup imho

Hey Don, nice Starfire. I'm in Frisco, want to trade?

huh, it worked for me! Although, the door panel illustrations are pretty inaccurate

Thanks to all you guys for the welcome and the helpful tips. I can't wait to re-upholster this baby.

It looks classic and mean at the same time! I like the beauty dishes without the hub-caps, but I do have all the original stuff in the garage

I was VERY close to gettting one with a perfect body and perfect, original interior... the engine needed to be rebuilt tho... and since they only have that specific 390 for 1-2 years, it was just a little too expensive for me to get wrapped up in. I still think about that car

just fixed the passenger front window. it was stuck down and I had to reset the window and motor to get it fixed.

It looks like I ignorantly avoided disaster somehow, in the process
I didn't bolt the balance arm to the door frame like the manual suggests, but somehow, nothing bad happened to my fingers. Sometimes it's better to be lucky I guess.

Love the front Grille real style. Have an 88 loaded. Curious, I noticed some kind of switches above radio just under dash..what are they for. And the switch just to the right of the speedometer, don't have them in mine.
Good luck

The button to right of speedometer is the set **** for the Safety Sentinel (speed warning) You set the yellow needle on the speedometer with it, when the car hits or exceeds that speed a small yellow light above the set **** comes on and this gawdawful squawking warning buzzer goes off.

The switch above the radio appears to be power antenna on this Ninety Eight. Other optional accessory switches in that location would be rear defog blower, reverb rear speaker, or convertible top on converts.

This car just looks right slammed. It looks as low as in the artwork in the sales brochures.

I can't help but wonder if there's a woodgrain wheel under that steering wheel cover.

Nice, Very nice!

My son had one of those for a few years, the wing vent crank mechanisms were broken on his and it was in poorer shape overall. It was still very fun to ride in and to drive. Welcome to the site.

I kinda have to. I'm the NAOC 1964 tech advisor.

I like the way you handle the camera with this car. Interesting shots that capture the details.

The 63-64 LS was actually developed to help Fisher Body amortize costs of the Cadillac six-window hardtop sedan. Olds and Buick both got versions of the C-body 6-window pillarless sedan in 1963. They use the same window and body glass, headliner and sunvisors as the Cadillac, and by sharing those details, got a little more prestige in the GM hierarchy. The 65-70 LS had frameless door glass like a hardtop but featured a B-pillar, becoming a "pillared hardtop sedan" which was GM's high-zoot luxury bodystyle those years.

The truth was GM saw how well pillared hardtop styling worked for the Lincoln Continental and didn't want to get left in the lurch by Ford again, as had happened with Mustang.

Thanks, there are so many interesting things about classic cars, it's easy to find good material

When I found this car, it was pretty obvious that it was competing with the Lincolns and Caddys of the day. It has many of the same features and styling.

I much prefer the non-pillar hardtop over anything with a pillar.

So did Olds have a competitor for the mustang, or did they just stay out of that class, and get left empty-handed?

They wanted to produce their version of the F body, but were denied, basically as compensation in a way, they were allowed the Hurst Olds.

A quick shot with the Healing Brush, or similar blurring tool, especially after a cut and past of a section of sky, would get rid of them .

I donno, 1964 was the space age and they had satellite antennae back then, so it gives a space-age touch to that shot. Granted, satcom dishes back then were bigger than houses, but you get the idea.

I like your car, I have a 64 98 Custom Sport. If you need manuals check Fusic Auto, and SMS Auto has original fabrics for interior. Check my album, for pictures of my ride.

It had the 394, hydromatic, but it has been changed to a 350 with a th350 tranny, They are great cruising cars. I am starting a total rebuild, long winters in Canada, and I hope to have it finished for spring cruising.

Sorry, it's a '79 Chev truck motor, 4 bolt mains, very strong. The reason I went this way is because of the availability of parts. I drive this car a lot, it's not a trailer queen. I wanted something that was reliable and easy to find parts for. I was going to put a 455 into it, but the cost is just too much, to justify.
