The Ram Rod was just Oldsmobile's marketing name for the W-31 engine option in the 1968 model year. For 1969-1970, they used the W-31 name. Then engines were nearly identical for the three years. The differences were mainly the intake (iron for 68-9 and aluminum for 70), the cylinder head castings (#5 for 68-9 and #6 for 70), and the outside air induction system (under bumper scoops for 68-9 and scoops on the hood for 70).

All three years used flattop pistons to get a 10.5:1 CR, 2.000/1.625 valves, and the same 308 degree cam.
