Newbie from Dallas

Hello,

My first olds was a 83 cutlass. the motor blew and I dropped in a 455, comp cam, 75shot of nos, slicks and tourqe became my new best friend. I had a buddy who was pretty familiar with Olds because he had been racing them for years so he knew how to build a olds motor. Now I cant get in touch with him and I just began the process of purchasing a 71 cutlass convertible that will be my daily driver. I plan to use this site to help me on the full build. She needs work but hey dont we all.

I am not sure where to start. I dont have a garage so I may start with a new top. I'm not expecting her to run or anything but I was told that it did run with no problems before being parked. I have small rust issues to handle in the trunk and floor boards but my neighbor is a welder who works at a race car shop building suspensions. He is on board to help with anything through a deal we worked out. I thought about buying a tarp and just workin on the motor and suspension. Again i'm really not sure where to start. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thats the reason for my excitement. I know it wont be easy but I hope to be driving at least short trips by feb or march. My job is only 5 minutes away, driving to work and tha parts store would be cool. I really want to have it ready for a road trip by the summer.

Wow - you do have a good project there. It can be costly, too, depending on what level you wish to go.
A daily driver? A little risky in most areas in Dallas, so at least get a club and maybe some sort of alarm or such. Watch for people following you to find out where you live.

What area of dallas? I am in far east Plano.
I like those door panel speakers. Realistic from Rat Shack? Those were pretty cool back in the day.

Looks like it can use a nice repaint. If thats in the budget, I would do that first, then the top and weatherstripping. Get the rusted floors fixed next and clean the engine up and give it a reseal if needed, and a good tune-up. Clean the interior as best you can, maybe find some sort of passenger seat...

What color is the interior? Looks like dark green... If you plan to change colors, and want to keep a seriously low budget, I have a complete set of used but not abused saddle colored door/quarter panels. Heck, you might even be able to redye the saddle parts green. However, yours may clean up pretty well - you never know...

Of course, no garage = quality car cover is the first item to buy! California Car Covers seem to have some of the best. In a pinch, a thick water repelling boat cover can be used.......

Thank all you guys for the warm welcome.

@ Rob The interior is black and thank you. when I get going on it ill definately let you know if I can use those parts. I just went over your Int. upgrade and man I envy you. You did a great job. What was your final review of the dynamat. I definately wanted to do that and was curious how much you notice it.

I am torn between what I want this car to look like. Part of me wants to do a classic rebuild and the customizing hot rodder in me wants to kinda trick it out with classy subtle changes similar to a Chip Foose look.

It did make a difference - here is the review, even before the dynamat was put inside the doors:

For a 2000 mile a year car driving in hot climates, worth it.
For driving in hot climates, more than 500 miles a year, probably worth it.
For a 200 mile a year car, do not bother.

I will be driving this car allot. It will be my daily but I also want to go to local and semi-local car shows. I’m also planning a road trip. So, I’ll probably go with the insulation.

Does CO have an annual show or an event where they get the members together for a drive?
