Hello everyone - my name is Bill Sutherland and I am the proud owner of a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible. I inherited the car back in February, after my grandfather passed away at 90 years young. I was promised the car on my 8th birthday and when I went to claim it on my 16th birthday, Grandpa said "Hell NO, not until I am dead".
The car has 38k original miles on it, A/C, SSIII's and is flame orange. As my grandfather got older, he spent less and less time with his cars, so I had a lot of clean-up projects to do - replace bulbs, replace dinged up chrome etc. I replaced the white walls, scraped and restored the ugly trunk compartment. I have replaced several parts with NOS GM parts including sill plates, all four rear lenses, headlight bezels, front market lenses, door edge guards and some trunk chrome. I love the car to death, and my 12yr old son has taken quite a liking to it. We actually entered and won our first car show a few weeks back as BEST OF SHOW. We were shocked and thought it awesome. A great way to honor my grandparent's memories.
a) Currently restoring an 8-track and housing unit.
b) I just found a set of NOS trim rings as grandpa left some dents and dings in the ones on there now, so those will be here soon.
c) I have to sand, paint and install a set of 1972 sport mirrors I purchased from a buddy in Indiana.
d) I have to install the external thermometer unit on the driver door. This is probably one of my favorite recent purchases.
e) I need to replace valve cover gaskets, etc. as I have an ugly oil leak.
f) Searching for a set of (4) NOS bolt-on center caps.
I love working on the car, and love spending time with my son knocking out some projects. He wants his own '72 Cutlass convertible, so we will see what happens
Great story told of your Gramps & you honoring him ! Beautiful car !
My grandparents bought the car new in 1972 and I remember riding around in it when I was really little - always sitting in the middle spot in the front seat, and they usually took me to Dairy Queen for ice cream cones. But we couldn't eat in the car of course
A couple of my recent pickups: Just picked up this NOS mini console to use to display 8-tracks when I do car shows. Need to sand, paint and install this winter Super cool addition to my collection My grandfather always wanted to add one of these and never got around to it. He had the thermometer on his 1975 Olds Delta 88 convertible and loved it.
Be aware that the mirrors will need backing plates so the screws don't pull through the door sheet metal.
Thanks, I will have to see if they were included in the deal I purchased. If not, I may need some direction as to what they look like and where I can pick them up.
Welcome to the group... The histories pertaining to Oldsmobiles with long term family heritage should be preserved for as long as possible...
My 12yr old son is into the car. He takes great car of it, and he loved doing his first car show and we won Best of Show, so he was so excited. He will preserve the history for sure!
Very nice and very nice your son is enjoying it with you. I had a 72 (I have actually had 2) very similar to yours but not as nice. I would welcome you to visit the NTOC website. We have been having Zoom meetings but actually had one at a members home this month where we could social distance. We have a cruise tomorrow which I am unfortunately going to miss. Here is a link to our website. Should you have any questions please send me a PM.
