I am Kyle, and I recently got my first car. It is an '87 Cutlass Supreme Brougham, 3.8L V6. I bought the car this past summer with no previous knowledge of Oldsmobile or even car repair. I have fixed all of the problems so far and am learning (replaced radiator, heater core, power steering pump and pulley, windshield washer pump, and speakers). Despite my limited knowledge, I decided to buy a 1972 Oldsmobile 350 2BL (with all pulleys and brackets) and the attached turbo 400 transmission (that is what he called it) out of a '72 Delta 88. I know, I know, dumb decision, but I decided the best way to learn about cars is to throw myself in full fledge. I am really excited about this and happy to be a part of the Oldsmobile crowd!

PS. I bought the Oldsmobile engine because my neighbor is a car guy (70's Fiats) and he told me the swap would be simpler staying with the same brand, as well as keep the cars value and "pure" status. He advised me to do nothing above a 350 just due to gas mileage as well as fitment issues and having to change the rear end.

Welcome. Make a new post asking about the engine and trans change. Was the engine running? Are your plans to rebuild it before you install?

 

Yes I plan on rebuilding both the transmission and engine. He claimed they were running but I haven't seen the engine yet, I actually am picking it up tomorrow. I will be posting on the engine when the time comes.

Welcome to the group... Good choice staying with an Olds engine for your swap... One thing to consider however, is the use of the 72 Delta 400 Trans... Most likely that trans has a long tail shaft housing instead of the short housing used in the Cutlass A-Bodies... This will present some mounting and drive shaft issues for your G-Body Cutlass... As for installing the 350 in place of the 231, use the frame and engine mounts for the standard 307...
