Whatup

Hello all you Olds lovers out there! I'm new and looking to educate myself on these wonderful machines and figure out what my dad loves about them so much, so I can share in the excitement.

Dad has a '69 Cutlass S vert. Pretty car. He had one similar to it in High School and is now building one the way he wanted to back then.

I'm a wrencher myself. Got the skills from dad. I am more of a classic truck guy (Early Broncos), so this insight will definitely prove very valuable. Plus, anything to wrench with dad again.

Anyway, thanks for letting me hang and see you in the forums.

Welcome aboard!
Always nice to see the Olds 'family' going full circle. 69 vert is a gorgeous car and I'm sure both of you will have many (frustrating at times) hours of tag team getting it done. I like the way your Dad thinks. That's pretty much how I'm doing my Olds. I'm building it the way I would have ordered it. So far it's been a very long road and I'm not anywhere close to being finished.

Hope the car budget is stable. You know what I mean.

Please post some pics of the car? Also start a thread about the project and post pics of the progress as you go? Lots of folks who are in the same boat as you guys, with the exception that you actually are doing the father/son resto! Good for both of you!!

Thanks Allan! I will post some pics of the car directly after Father's Day. I'm actually looking for one more piece of the puzzle on this forum and I don't want him to happen upon the venture.

A former military buddy and I (that my dad took under his wing) are going to surprise him with a building weekend. We all live in separate states, so it will be nice to make it happen. I will start a thread then as well.

He is getting a new top end for his mighty 350 Rocket with Edelbrock manifold, cam, and Holley Billet Ultra carb. We will be putting headers on as well. The car is also getting an "O" 12/10 bolt disc rear, and new power assist brake setup. That is probably all we will get done as we are all disabled vets that enjoy campfire time. It will be fun. Dad just doesn't have it in him to do this stuff solo anymore (even though he won't admit it). Between the three of us, we will be baking down the bolognas all over the back roads.

Cool! Anything we can do to help track down that missing piece of the puzzle? If it's parts related or just info, there's a vast knowledge base here for the asking.

On a side note, Thank you for your service, and I'm sorry to hear that all 3 of you are all disabled. On the positive side, it's really important that you're not letting it stop you.

Not sure what you mean by 12/10 bolt disc rear?? The 69's had an "O" rear end, but it's not as strong as the 8.5 10 bolt corporate. Plus gears for a 12 bolt are not being made. Maybe you meant the 12 bolt is replaced with a 10 bolt, and you're installing disc brakes on the rear to make the car 4 wheel disc brakes? 69 had the option for Power disc brakes (RPO code JL2). Is it a drum brake car being converted to disc or a disc car being converted to 4 wheel disc? Sounds confusing doesn't it?

I don't have my Dad around any more but sure wish I did, so I am very thankful to see you are spending the time with him and sharing these experiences while you can.

Welcome to the site. My hats off to your dad for getting you involved in the car hobby and giving you a start on your education. I'm also glad you still enjoy doing it with your dad.

Post some pics of your stuff and of course his Olds also.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Allan, I'm sorry for your loss. After I graduated from high school (barely), we haven't been able to wrench much. We do still work on each other's gear. He did a lot of work on my Bronco for the four years I was not in the states. Did a great job!

The missing piece is an Edelbrock manifold, but I didn't want to turn this into a parts wanted thread, lol.

We are not too disabled. We still get around, just takes longer.

That is what I mean about the "O" 12 bolt. It is drums now, but we are swapping over to discs. I tried to talk him out of using the Olds 12 bolt, but he wants it. I guess I will have to wait until he breaks it to convince him to go Corporate. His does have factory power brakes, we are just putting a new booster and dual disc master on it.

No surprise for gearheads, but my favorite time is under a hood. We didn't have much money growing up, so we just had to fix our stuff. It was nice being able to spend a fraction of the cost to get stuff back on the road. Dad got me so good at it, that I built my first vehicle from three hulks he pulled out of the junkyard. It was a 1961 ****** Truck made from similar year trucks. After I could not repair that any longer, I moved on, but I still remember using hand tools to cut ever single bolt I touched due to Pennsylvania rust.

Alright, well anyway, thanks again, and see you in the forums.

My dad is the reason I got into Oldsmobile too... My parents had a 69 that brought me and my sister home from the hospital after we were born. It is the reason years later I bought one for myself

Welcome to the site. 69 is a good year. Start a build thread on this site if you can so we can follow along through your posts. Good luck on it.
