I'm looking to add a ram air hood to my 1972 olds cutlass supreme convertible, where is the best place and brand to buy.

 

If you're truly looking for the best OAI hood (and not the best alternative on a limited budget), Thornton is your only choice besides original. Not cheap, but the best quality, best fit without tons of body work, and built just like the originals.

Thornton? is that a auto parts place? sorry I haven't herd of them before and I am looking in to getting a oai hood for my 70.

 

If your car is a show car Thornton is a best option but $$$$.
For a really nice driver quality, I would order from Tamraz on Ebay.

I got one for my 70 and it was actually very decent quality and didn't take much prep to be paint ready.

 

Be aware that link is for a 71-72 hood and not a 70 hood.

Thornton is the closest thing to factory original, steel frame with fiberglass top. 2400.00 +- then cost to prep and paint by your body shop. Mine fit perfect. Thorntonmusclecars.com

Thepartsplace.com has a hood with steel frame, fiberglass top also but I don't know how good it is.

You can buy an all fiberglass hood cheaper but will need to buy different weaker hood springs to keep it from warping. The hoods are usually under 900.00 some cheaper.

i have a new set of the weaker springs needed for the fiberglass one. Also have a new 71-72 Glasstek hood from Tamraz. Got with a car I bought. New Quarters too.

 

Depending on your budget and level of restoration I would get the best possible. In my case not many people noticed I had changed from all fiberglass to Thornton but I am very picky so the Thornton was the only way to go. most will not notice but if your car is premo and budget allows -Thornton. The average person will not know if your hood has a steel frame or fiberglass. If you just want the look and it's a daily driver then go cheap.

 

what Gary said, from 5 feet away you really can't tell. My friend has a cheap OAI hood and it looks fine. My W-30s have originals as good as they look they both have the drivers side front sag. If you can't find an original and want a great hood the Thorton's fit really well, the ones I have seen fit even better than the originals. But heck for $600 - $900 on a non-orignal car its hard to not save that much money.

What did you end up going with? I'm trying to source one locally up here in Canada before i go for ebay or thortons.

 

My body shop was disappointed with the fit of Fiber concepts hood, we chose not to use it. I'm going to sell it, but from all research I did just pay the money for Thortons hood. My hood was high on the middle of the fenders and laid on the cowl with no gap, it also dipped hard in the front. Good luck

 

Wow that sounds like a rough deal, do you have any pictures of the fiber concepts or thorton hood??

 

Should call fiber concepts and tell Robb your issues. I bet he would work with you to remedy a bad fitment. I've heard good things from others about those hoods..
FYI, the parts place also sells the Thornton hoods for the same price as Thornton.

 

Hello all, anyone have a 71 cowl induction hood for sale?

 

Has anyone bought a hood from Stinger fiberglass in Titusville Fl? Looks like good quality, but I cant find much info on them.

 

Cowl induction is a Chevy product. OAI is Olds Outside Air Induction.
