VIN DERIVATIVE

1971 delta 88 455. Is the engine derivative number in the same location as on the 350? Small machined pad just behind and below the alternator brackket. I can't seem to find it ( the number that is, I have found the alternater). Could this be an older 455 before they used derivative numbers, in other words not the original engine? It does have "G" head and "W" and "Z" manifolds.

VIN stampings started in '68, the same year they started 455s.
Replacement blocks had blank pads. The pads are on all 455s.
Can you find the pad?

And yes, the VIN derivative is in the same place on all 1968-1990 Olds V8s.

I think I've found the Pad. I'll try to explain: drivers side, on the SIDE of the block just below the alt brkt that runs from front to back. It feels like it is just rough cast, not machined, maybe it's just rusty. I'll have to 'crawl in there" and try cleaniing it maybe it is machined?? It's a big engine compartment but it's also a big engine so it's still cramped
Thanks
Frank

With apologies to the guys over at Oldspower.com (from which I stole this JPG), here's the pad location.

Sounds like you've found it. Clean it up really good, use a flashlight and a mirror if you can't get an angle on it.

I pressed some body putty onto mine (after cleaning it) and let the putty dry. When I removed it I was able to see the reversed image of the stamping.

You guys are amazing! Some fellow goes wacko over finding a number and you all go to such an effort to help him find it. I've rented a garage about 3 blocks from my home so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to go check it.
Thanks Much All Of You
Frank
