I would like a little insight on a VIN Number code for a 1968 convertible with all digits confirmed except the 7th digit which is "H". My understanding is that the 7th digit represents the manufacturing plant location. Any insight would be appreciated.

 

You did not specify which 68 model VIN you have...
There is no "H" plant code listed in the 68 CSM...
Series 3100 thru 4800 - plant codes listed are M - C - G - E
Series 5400 thru 6600 - M - X - C - D - E
Series 8400 thru 9400 - M
Series 3100 thru 4400 - Built in Oshawa, Canada - Plant code is "1"
M=Lansing; C=Southgate, CA; G=Framingham; E=Linden; D=Atlanta; X=Kansas City

 

The vehicle is a1968 convertible 442.

 

Are you sure that it is an H an not an M.

 

^^X2... How clear is your VIN plate??? Like I said, there is no H listed...

 

And sometimes they are hard to read. When my parents moved from Oregon to Washington in 1971, Dept. Of Licensing misread an "8" in their VIN as a "B". It stayed that way until 2007 that car (a '68 4-4-2 convertible) was given to me, at which time I had to jump through all kinds of hoops with DOL to get the "B" corrected to an "8".

There is no need to contact GM or anyone else. Simply read the Chassis Service Manual for the 1968 model year, where Oldsmobile documented exactly what information was in the VIN. The photo below is the VIN decoding info from that document. Note that there are NO assembly plants that used the code "H" for the 1968 model year. There is no fuzz on this whatsoever. Either you are misreading the VIN tag or it has been altered. The cowl tag will also tell you the assembly plant. What does that say?

 

The only way your 7th digit is an H is if you actually own a 1968 BUICK built in FLINT MI instead of a 1968 OLDSMOBILE.


Are you sure you own an Olds? Post your entire VIN.

 

Better yet, he should post a clear photo of the VIN plate. While I'm not doubting his eyesight, the number of times people have come on this site and claimed with certainty that a VIN or cowl tag contained a certain character only to have this turn out not to be the case is too many to count.

I suppose there is always the 1 in a million chance that the VIN plate has a mistake in it? Let's see it.

 

The chances that the factory would install a VIN tag with the wrong assembly plant code are essentially zero. These tags were delivered to the assembly plant with all but positions two through five already stamped. Even the sequential build numbers were pre-stamped. Obviously, only tags stamped for that assembly plant were delivered to the plant. The workers took the next one off the stack and only the model and body style codes were stamped at the assembly plant. Do you REALLY think that somehow one of these hundred-thousand pre-stamped tags had the wrong assembly plant code?

Of course not. I was just throwing out unreasonable reasons to explain something that is apparently unexplainable. But won't we all have egg on our face when he posts a photo of the VIN plate, and there really is an H.

 

Given the cryptic responses from this OP and the fact that getting info has been like pulling teeth, I've lost interest by now.

 

Perhaps 34 is from 344 in the VIN ruling out that the car is a Buick
