Steve's 442

As requested, here is a pic of my 442. Its an old pic, mid-80s I'd guess.

I had trouble looking at the small pic even with my new glasses.

Very very nice car. Is it a 71 or 72? Can't tell from the pic. Guessing 72 as the front headlight reveals are blacked out, 442 badging on the grille looks like it's got some reddish color, and the side stripe looks like the one on my car.

Yup, I know what you mean. But.....that car has a real front license plate, so I think it's the real McCoy. I think the plate is from TX though, not NY

My guess would be 71 because I don't know if the W30 was an option in 72.

Re Steve's 442

Thanks everyone. Yes, its a 72 (VIN is 3F87X2M144099). The plate is Virginia. The photo was taken by a friend of mine (that's me in the pic) and the water in the background is the Potomac River. This was at a small recreation area along the Potomac just north of Mount Vernon. Its a 4 speed, 3.42 gears in the rear.

Ok...so some of you will feel better...I've attached some current (and far less glamorous) pics after starting the tear down.

Nice teardown.
those valve covers are killer, where did you get them???

That's filler on the passenger roof line? What happened?

Getting started on the re-birth, what fun. Most of us have been there, some are still there, and others have more the one car and are in all the stages at once. Good luck

That body looks pretty darn straight, we should all be so lucky to have one that clean to start with.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has seen a set of these valve covers. As far as I know, they were never for sale but I could be wrong about that. Where I got them: I go to the Indy 500 every year, next week will be my 33rd consecutive Indy 500. I'd say somewhere in the early 80s Indy held a racing exhibit and trade show on the museum grounds the Saturday before the 500. AJ Foyt had an exhibit there with some of his old Indy cars as well as his NASCAR stock car (an oldsmobile). These valve covers (meaning ones like them) were on his engine in his stock car. There was an employee of Foyt racing there and I asked him about the valve covers and if/where I could get a set for my 442. He told me they were made specifically by Foyt's engine builder (it may have been Warren Johnson's shop at the time, but I don't remember for certain) and only for AJs engine. I asked if there was anyway I could get a set. He said he would check and I gave him my contact info. A couple of weeks after Indy he called me, much to my surprise, and said yes, he would sent me a set...no charge, just COD shipping costs. I can't tell you how excited I was when these babies came in the mail. Slapped them on and threw away the old stock ones (which NOW I wished I'd kept). Maybe at some point they were sold by someone, but I've never seen them for sale anywhere, but then again I've been away from the car scene for 20 years.

That's filler on the passenger roof line? What happened?
Ok...you had to ask!!! Its actually not filler, just white primer. Its from an incident that ultimately led to my doing the full restore. Six years ago my son came for a visit. He lived about 7 hours away and I hadn't seen him for awhile. I hadn't had the 442 out of the garage for quite some time and I mentioned to him that it needed some exercise. He of course offered his services and I said ok. Next thing I know he's calling me all in a panic. A deer jumped out on him (tons of them around here where I live) and he served to miss the deer. He missed the deer...BUT...ran over some lady's mailbox. The impact dented the fender, cracked the fiberglass on the hood (not too bad), broke the windshield, dented the passenger side roof post, and then gouged the hell out of the paint on the roof as it scrapped along the top of the car. I replaced the fender, had a body shop fix the roof post and replace the windshield and I sanded out the roof and threw some primer on it. And its sat there in the garage in a state of limbo until just last summer when I started pulling the front end off of it to replace the a-frame bushings. THAT led me to decide what the hell, might as well have the 'Full Monty' and get it all re done and back to 'correct'.

My son, you ask??? Kicked his ***!!!

Thanks.

Steve

OK...just to follow up on the valve covers. Out of curiosity I did a search and found what appears to be the exact valve covers listed on Mondello's (www.mondellotwister.com). Part number VC-485 for $299.00.

So I stand corrected...not as unique as I thought they might be.
